Engine Tick

Hey Guys, I have a 1972 C10 and I have an engine in it with less than 2K miles and I bought the engine and put it in my truck about 6 months ago. It is a 350 Big Block with a RV Cam in it. I just, within the last week, started hearing a tick on one of the passenger side cylinders. I have done a little bit of research and I am pretty sure that it is just a lose rocker arm. If that is the case, how difficult is it to take off the valve cover, and then tighten the rocker arm, and then put the valve cover back on with all the seals and everything. If you have any experience or anything you ran into when you did something like that, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Its easy...with the engine off...remove the (4) valve cover bolts, then remove the valve cover. After that use your hand to check each of the (8) revealed rocker arms. If you find a loose ('rattley') one (which you probably will)...set that cylinder to TDC and with a 5/8" socket tighten it down until its snug then add about 1/4 to 1/2 turn more.
Some of the other guys will weigh in clean up some of my info I'm sure.
All good

My mom always had the best advice. It was just a tad late. After a fall that involved blood, she'd say....."Careful!"

Re: Engine Tick

Awesome thanks for the reply, but is there any special trick or technique to put the valve cover back on with the gasket?

Here's a wiki on adjusting valves.

Re: Engine Tick

350 big block ... would that be a Pontiac?

Follow the instructions laid out above and hopefully your problem will be solved. Be sure to look for worn parts, notches cut into the side of rocker studs and the like.
