Re: Holley OE replacement throttle body 87-89
I had one on my 89 1/2 ton. I miss that truck now but I did hear about other guys having problems with the injectors leaking I believe. My truck had the 350 and 700r4 and it sounded awesome with the holley on there and my dumped flowmaster exhaust. It did gain some low end acceleration in my opinion with all else being stock.
I will tell you that I don't think they are worth the money unless you are going to also install upgraded cylinder heads or a cam to match the increase in CFM that the holley provides. Plus you have to fiddle with your fuel pressure and other little things because the stock ECM has no idea that you installed something that is pretty different from the stock tbi unit. If I could go back then I would have just gotten my factory tbi rebuilt and never had to hassle with anything else like I did with the holley. |

Good information thanks for the reply, a friend told me to put a 454 throttle body on the truck, but i think i would wind up with the same issues you had with the holley. i would just like a little more pulling power out of my truck.

I had one about 15 years ago, it wasn't anything I'd ever have again. Injectors were poor quality. Not even a little seat of the pants improvement. Never idled right and never started cold (like below 40) right. The factory unit is plenty for a stock motor, the heads and cam will only breathe so much no matter how big the throttle bores are.

After hearing the cons of the throttle body, i think ill just try to find a good RV cam for the truck. Thank y'all for the feedback. i have my 87 4x4, and a 58 apache fleetside (project), and the guys on this forum have been awesome.

Quote:
4.3, 5.0 and 5.7 TBI's are all the same CFM with 1 11/16th bores. The injectors are different sizes. The 454 is larger with close to 2 inch bore. Desert |
