Re: Transporting truck from US to Canada

Things have changed in the last year. Now I believe you need to use a broker to bring a vehicle into Canada. There is a thread about it on the Canadian Rodder site.

Re: Transporting truck from US to Canada

Here is some more info from my customer!

Thanks Bob

Everything he says is accurate until April of 2014

Then the US changed and the new requirement is for the information to be filed with the border electronically. To do the electronic information filing you must have the ability to enter data on the new ITN system. If you are an American you can apply for the capability to do it for your self for personal use.

As a Canadian I have to hire a US Broker or Freight forwarder to complete the information for me.

I am trying to find one now in order to get pricing and specifics.

Re: Transporting truck from US to Canada

Sounds like the Canadian freight forwarders have a pretty good lobbyist...

Re: Transporting truck from US to Canada

Yup now the brokers get an extra $150-300 per vehicle. I've always imported myself but now I can't which sucks. Just make sure the Title matches the VIN that's the biggest thing. Nothing can cross without a VIN # matching the Title. Keeps most of the shady vehicles out lol

Re: Transporting truck from US to Canada

What va4cqd said. We bought our 87 Jimmy last April from AZ. Send title, bill of sale to border you are crossing at via e-mail. They will send you a response print it all off and bring with you. You will pay provincial tax at border. If the vehicle is older than 15 years that's all you have to do, no duty. If it is newer than 15 years you have to register it in the RIV program, that checks that the vehicle meets safety standards. My brother imported a 2010 jetta in 2013 and the dealer did the paper work, duty was paid.
