Title for sale?

I don't understand selling and purchasing of titles. I thought that titles were exclusive to one vehicle and one vehicle only. I see board members selling or inquiring about them occasionally. Maybe you guys know something that I do not know. Can somebody please explain this to me.

When I bought my 67 the owner said that he did not have a title for the truck but all that I would need is a bill of sale for the DMV to get it on the road. He said that he had bought the truck 2 years earlier and went through the same thing with no problems with the DMV. I believed him because he seemed confident about what he was talking about.

Do I need a title? Will DMV submit one to you after you get it registered?

It really depends on the state. Some states are sticklers for documentation, and others will give a title to any old joe. If you have no means of getting a title or built the vehicle yourself, you can get a Sheriff's title or Self-Assembled Vehicle title. Again, it depends on the state so it would be good to check with the local DMV first. Just call them and make sure not to let them know who you are

LOL, my crazy driving days are well behind me. Increased insurance rates saw to that.

As far as the info 75-K5 that is what I pretty much figured.

Thanks for the input.

What state did yoy buy the truck in?In Pa you can apply for a lost title.As long as the paper work is clean and there are no leans on it,the dmv will issue a new title.In pa you need the title to get the truck registered.I had to take the bill of sale to a state notary,and they filled out the proper fourms.3 weeks later I had the new title and registration.Here the bill of sale had to be notarized,or the guy I bought it from had to be with me.

smokekiki,

I bought it in CT. I believe that PA rules are very similar to CT rules.

Thanks for the info guys.

i just bought a car in con. and when i asked for the title he said he didnt have one. i was not happy considering i flew there from seattle. hes owned the car for quite awhile and said they never gave him one when he purchased the car because con. doesnt issue titles on cars after a certain year...(im thinking it was early 80s). we even went online to the con. dmv website and sure enough they dont issue titles. but you do have to have a registration and documentation from the previous owners that shows how the car has changed hands. he did have the original title and all the documentation of last couple of owners and himself. now when i went to the dmv here in washington state to register it here they werent buying any of that till they looked up con. rules for titleing older cars. they sent through the bill of sale he gave me and the one thats attatched to the cars registration from con. they said if the state has any problems i have plenty of docs to show whats up....crossing fingers till i get my new washington title in the mail.

con. = connecticut

In Connecticut any vehicle that is 20 or 25 years old does not need a title, only a bill of sale to have the DMV register it. Also, anything that old in CT does not need to go through emissions testing.

Here in mass. all trucks need titles no matter how old they are. emissions stop at 82 or older. it is like pulling hens teeth to get a lost or new title for an older truck. they ,re only good for parts if you don,t have a clean title I hate this state.
