Advice for Prep Work for Painting Grill - I'm Scared

quick question... I am about to embark on painting my grille and head light bezels. While I'm a pro at prepping and painting metal parts, im a novice at restoring plastic parts. With that, can anyone give me any tips on prepping the plastic. Note from the picture, the bezels have some bubbling.

I'm thinking...

- clean with soap and water.
- light sand with like 800 grit.
- clean and repeat.
- bust out the silver wheel point and hit it with 4 coats.

Is sanding safe? And what grit?
Do I need to prime?
Is there a good way to shoot it? Front, back, side?

Thanks.

I will watch this post too! I do know I haven't had much luck myself painting the metal headlight bezels and getting it to stick well. I know guys have sandblasted them with good results though. As far as the grill goes, guess it would depend on what condition it is in on how I would prep it.

Hmmm... I bought the bezels were plastic as well. I never really tapped them. I assumed that as the paint is sort of bubbling like it would on plastic

As for the grille (or is it grill), it's in good condition. Just almost 40years old. Paint dull.

Nope, the H/L bezels are pot metal. I just cleaned mine up with a bit of 220 grit then lacquer thinner and rattle canned the the area where they were painted argent from the factory with Rustoleum semi-gloss black.
