61 Apache questions

Hello I own a 61 Chevy Apache step side short bed pick up truck and have some things I would like to improve on the truck and would like your feedback on them. The truck is pretty much original, 235 CID 6 cyl , 3 spd moved to the floor, drum brakes all the way around and original suspension. I would like to eventually add disc front brakes, drop in an 8 cylinder and an automatic. Would it be easier and cheaper for me to just go with a different frame already with an 8cyl, front disc and automatic or try to work with the original truck? If you suggest a different frame, which one( what would fit best)? I am not looking to make this a race truck just a little more get up and go.

While I typically recommend keeping an original frame, I am not a fan of the '60-'62 frames, so I make an exception there as long as it is done legally. They are just more difficult to work with, mostly due to the X-member in the middle. To install a V8 and auto trans into a '60-'62 frame, you will want to use a pair of '67-'72 small block engine mount brackets. For the trans mount, you will have to fabricate one. Changing to front disc brakes can be done by either purchasing aftermarket dropped spindles, or changing the entire front suspension to a '71-'87 front suspension. There are quite a few holes to drill with the latter.

If you do decide to change the frame, a '63-'66 frame will be the best, but a '67-'72 will work with a few modifications. Just be sure to contract your local DMV to see what it takes to make a frame swap legal in your state.......different VIN on the cab versus the VIN on the frame.

Captain Fab, thank you for the reply. Can you purchase the engine mount brackets 67-72 or do I need to find them in a boneyard? Would the 71 -87 front suspension be bolted or welded in ( sub frame)?

The 71-87 front suspension is the right width to bolt right in, you will need to drill a few holes.
You should be able to work with the engine mounts from the 71-87 also.
On your frame there is a crossmember that attaches to the front of the tranny, it will have to be cut out. You will need to fabricate a new rear crossmember for the tranny. You may be able to rework the 71-87 crossmember.

61 Apache 10, thanks for the reply. When you say 71 -87 front suspension you are speaking of a front suspension from a chevy 1/2 ton truck correct , not a car?

If I could find a 71-87 with a V8 and automatic that would even be better.

Yup, truck front end. That's whats in mine. I converted the discs to 6 lug.
