Progress on the 1968 Short n Wide GMC
It's been a while since I last posted a message. I have made a little progress over the last year on my truck and would like to share the details. This site has been a wealth of information and helped make many of my decisions easy. The truck is a 1968 GMC short bed that I found in Sedona Arizona. It was all original except the previous owner replaced the 307 with a 350 SBC. It has a 3-speed manual transmission, power brakes and power steering. I decided to take the plunge and convert from 6 lug to 5 lug wheels. I install front disk brakes with McGaughy 2-1/2 inch drop spindles and 1 inch drop springs. I swapped out the rear axles (Dana 44 not as easy to find) and will be installing ECE 4 inch drop leaf springs (as soon as they arrive) in addition to 1-1/2 inch drop shackles. I went with staggered Ridler 695's, 18x9.5 in the rear and 18x8 in the front. I added 1.25 inch Prowheel spacers in the rear to center up the tires in the wheel wells. Rear tires are 295/45/R18 Toyo Proxes ST II and in the front I am running 255/50/R18 Toyo Proxes ST II. I also added a new proportioning valve and master cylinder from ECE and new lowering shock all around, also from ECE...Stan was a great help! Now if I can load the pictures!
