How much would you offer?

I found a 71 chevy 1/2-ton swb bare optioned truck at a local tow/junk car yard. The has a few parts that I am in need of such as straight non-rotted front fenders, clean minimal-rot radiator support, and minimal-rot front inner fenders.
The truck spec & info:
71 Chevy 1/2-ton swb, five lug front & rear, rear leaf spring, sbc (327/350? original? running/not running?), 4 speed manual trans, no bed, rotted cab corners, rotted floor, rotted cab supports, rockers starting to rot, frame has a lot of surface rust (not rotted), gauge dash, Original GM pushbutton radio, power brakes, no power steering, no A/C, Heater fan is missing, grill is bashed pretty bad on the passenger side, front bumper on passenger side is tweaked a bit, the hood on the passenger side is crushed in a bit, No trim, doors are pretty solid, it has all wiring harnesses except for rear harness, and has all interior parts.
How much would you guys offer for this? What would be you highest limit?

I bought one similar (but a 69) last summer for 150, and got a nice 68 front clip with it. But being 72, probably 3-4 hundred.

I figure on stripping it down, taking the parts that I need for some of my other project trucks, selling what I can of it that is still good and scrap the rest. It's too far gone to do a restore.

Tough one, geography plays a bit of a role in this one. Having been born in New England and lived there for a couple of years I know how hard it is to find any vehicle that's not rusted to the bone. Yet out here in California, non-rusters are easy to find. What you've described would have little or no value here, but if you have the means to tear it down, retain some things and sell a few...I'd say no more than $300.

Questions to ask yourself. Do you have the time? Do you have a place to dispose of the carcass? Are the doors really solid? Means to move it...or how much to pay someone? I can't imagine that the weather is on your side at this time of year.

I have time most days after work and on the weekend so time is not really much of a problem. I have a friend that has a scrap metal yard and I have scrapped quite a few vehicles for him in the past, so getting rid of the carcass will be easy. The same friend have both a tow truck and a flatbed wreaker so moving the truck or the remains wont be difficult. If the doors aren't completely solid, not a big problem, I can weld patch panels. As for weather, that is always an issue but I ususally figure a way to work through it or around it.

Having parted 30+ trucks over the past 6 years, and most being typical New England rust buckets, I feel somehwat qualified to provide you with my advise.

I have never lost money parting any truck out that I paid $700 or less for. Heck, I've even made money parting $1200 - $1500 AZ rust-free 3/4 ton 2wd trucks after paying x-country shipping!

That being said, most of the trucks I bought were running and complete, but had been sitting for a while. I also looked for optioned trucks that were complete and original regardless of body condition, year or drivetrain/wheelbase.

Money can be made off the smallest of items because there are a lot of nuts out there who want OE parts for a stocker. Items like hubcaps , radios, radio knobs/brackets, uncut wiring harnesses, door panels, door guts, knobs, handles, latches, columns, engine accessory brackets, visors, mirrors, etc etc etc. Basically the higher degree of granularity in your willingness to part will determine how much can be recouped. Plus the smaller/lighter the part, the easier it is to ship. The down side is the longer time to recoup and the longer you have to hang onto stuff, not to mention the work involved. Large items like rear ends, trannys, etc are tough to move unless you're willing to discount. I've sold rears for $25, hoods for $10, trannys for $50, etc.

My advice, the truck as described is worth no more than $250, then you have to factor in the cost of hauling it off.

It's a buyers market because of this board (that's a good thing) and the fact that repops are getting less expensive. Plus shipping items is a real PITA, so don't expect to retire. If you break even and get the parts you want for free, it's worth it IMO.

If you get it, I may be interested in the 4 speed column and a few other pieces to.

I bought one like that last summer for $100. Depending on if the powertrain runs, I would say at the most $250

I talked to the guy last night and I got the truck for $75. I will pick it up later this week and it should be stripped by the end of next week.

I would post some pics, but it's all parted out now. Just a cab sitting on a 70 rolling chassis . I gave the 67 small back window cab to a buddy of mine and the rolling chassis will either be sold whole, parted out or cut up and made into a trailer

This weekend my girlfriend and I are going to ask about a 71/72 chevy blazer that has be sitting in a guys yard for a few years (She doesn't want to drive a pickup, they're too big for her, she likes and wants a blazer). I hope we have the same luck with this blazer as I had with this 71 parts truck, then I will have several projects to work on.

zyggy72, There is a pretty decent 71-72 chevy fleetside sitting at chuck and eddies in Southington. If I remember correctly the body was actually in really good condition I was actually surprised to see it in the junkyard. It was missing the driver side door though but for a junkyard truck it was pretty well intact. There was also a chevy custom there with bucket seats with the center fold down seat. It was a post 72 chevy model though.

I hope I do have good luck with this blazer also, then I can do something I like to do and the girlfriend can't complain about it because it would be her truck. It also gives me a reason to keep buying parts and other trucks.... "It had a part I needed so I bought the whole thing..."

I was going to restore it for my wifes toy but then she found a 58 GMC shorty that she liked even better. So I used te front clip and doors off this one for my 72 I gave the cab to a buddy that is doing up his 69 and now all I have is the rolling chassis to part out, and it's a 1970
