Cab removal question

I am going to pull my cab off and was wondering what's the best method for lifting off the frame? If I cant brace up the bottom of the cab well enough to lift from there,is it acceptable to run some 4x4 timbers through window openings and put straps (rated at 3000 lbs.) underneath timbers? Also, how much weight am I looking at for cab with doors still installed and all glass still in place? I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

Re: Cab removal question

doors are easy to take out and u can have the the glass out in thirty minutes too.. for the glass u just pop the trim off and then take a box cutter and cut the gasket and push out the glass

Re: Cab removal question

I used regular 4x4s The wood timbers that I'm thinking of are a little thin on the one side. Your probably looking at around 600 lbs. Remember alot of the weight is going to be on the front of the cab by engine comp. so when you lift it its going to want to roll forward. I had my doors open and ran the 4x4s through the cab. If you notch the 4x4s you wont ruin the door rubber or the metal under the rubber. If I do it again i'd use a 4x6 with notch. I also used a ratchet pulley. Good Luck

Re: Cab removal question

I took the time to remove everything from the cab. A little more work but it will def make the job easier. Once the doghouse was off I got 3 friends to help me lift the cab off. Wasn't difficult and only took a couple of minutes.

I just roll the side windows down and run straps through the openings.

Re: Cab removal question

Many thanks to all for your replies...

oldno7, Thanks for the tip on notching out the 4x4s...good idea.

tim21391, Good job on yoursheetmetal work on the cab.

Tx Firefighter, Oh,the versatility of a front end loader.I like your thinking...

Kevin at LFD, I'll be contacting you about that tilt/flip dolly.Might come in handy for all the work I need to do.

I was concerned mostly about issues of flexing and twisting everything out of shape, but looks like it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Cab removal question

A hoist works well too, I've seen folks use forklifts too. Kev that front end loader works good too, I wonder if the bucket on the old 3020 JD would go high enough to do the same thing?

Re: Cab removal question

I lag screwed two 2x4s together, removed the cab bolts, lifted the cab with a hydraulic jack, inserted the 2x4s front the front, marked holes for bolts, drilled holes, then inserted bolts. Once nuts were tightened affixing the cab to the boards I had 3 buddies help me lift the cab off. Very safe and easy.

Whatever you do, DON'T do that!

Thank God I read someone else's thread first who warned not to life with the doors closed. If you're using a strap, OPEN the doors, and lift on the cab top, NOT the top of the doors. You'll mess them up.
