Lightbulb Let's beef up a 250

Guys I want to keep the 250 I6 in my pickup. its a 67 c10 w/ 3 on tree.

I want to get:
> tube headers of good quality (I've seen a few go on eBay).
> 4 bbl Intake and carb. (I've seen a dual carb intake, what cha think?)
> and electric cooling fan and maybe h2o pump.

What do you guys think?
I want to be able to at least compete with a stock V8 but not loose that reputation the 250 has for "going Forever" .

Let's hear it guys. I'm might be rebuilding one of these. I have an extra motor to do this with!!

Thanks, Steven

Don't waste your money. Either live with the 6 for what it is or pull it and put in an 8. You will never make the 6 equal to the 8 and the parts to improve the 8 are much more plentiful and much cheaper.
I have had a 250, a 292 and a 350.
I like my old 292 well enough but if it has to be rebuilt, it is going to get swapped for a 350 real fast.

I mean it costs much more to rebuild and/or modify a six than say, a 350. I know, I've been there-done that. Parts are like double or more for a six. Don't take my word for it, check it for yourself.
The picture is from my camera--engine is in my Coupe--love the engine-hate the cost! BTW--all assembly done by yours truly.

I had a 250 once in a 68 chevelle. A company called "Clifford" out of california (I think) makes a bunch of stuff for the 250. They may still be around. Isky makes a nice cam for the 250 as well. If you change the cam out you will likely need to change valve springs as well. Good luck !!!

Cliffords is the main 6 gurus on speed. But like was mentioned, it cost a lot more for the 6 parts than a 350. If your doing it for power, then get a 350. If your doing just to be different, then check out cliffords. Most HIPoi parts are double what you can get for a 350.

smitty62,

Is that an Offenhauser intake manifold?

Like the picture of the old Chevy, noticed what looks to be a stop light on the building in back of her..........

For info and pics on building up inlines go to www.inliners.org
There are some great tips and pics of inlines there. I was going to build up my inline 6 but after weighing the cost and the power I wanted to achieve in the end, I built a 350 for around $2000. I have 2, 250's sitting in my stock right now and I still plan on building up an inline for the next project .

Bluebeard--no, believe it or not, it's an Edelbrock! Found it in so-so condition on Ebay--rebuilt it and I'm delighted ith it. It's heated the same as a stock manifold. Offenhauser has a P-poor system of heating--either with heat tubes or hot water. I love the sound of a six, mine is a bored .060" 235 and has a great split manifold and Smitty's--just like 50 years ago! But the power/cost ratio is way out of line.

BTW--the air cleaners shown are for sale--4 barrels modified to fit the single barrel carbs--$30 shipped. I'm now using 1940 Chevy truck air cleaners with Kohler air filters!

You CAN make a six run.... A freind of my dads is running a 301 Jimmy I-6 in a 57' Chevy 2 dr sedan. The car is all steel and running a 4 speed. He runs the car in the Nostalgia Drags sometimes(he has owned/raced it since the early 60's with this setup). He was an IHRA Natl' Record holder for years with that car running at Englishtown Raceway Park.

I have personally seen that car pull the front wheels 2 feet plus in the air and carry them for the first 40-60 feet. Sounds neat too!!!

I for one did NOT say you couldn't make a six run! I said it's too expensive for what you get. Hell, I've been running sixes since 1951--yes, I'm old, but not senile. You put $3000 into a Chevy 235 or a 292 GMC (forget 230's and 250's--poor design--you will find very little in the way of actual speed equipment for them--235 is a much better engine--292 GMC better yet) and you'll have sweet running and sounding engine-a lot of fun.
Put the SAME $3000 into a SBC 350 or 383 and it will run the A$$ off the six! If you want to be stubborn about this, feel free--but do your research.

I'm confused about your statement. You say the 235/261 is a better design. Why??? Yet you compare the 292 with the 235. The 292 is the same design as the 230/250, it's just got a longer stroke.

I ran a 292 on my '68 C/10 stepside [built in '77] to 2002. About 250,000 miles. It was bored .030 over, stock or heavy duty build. I ran a Holley 4 Bbl 390 cfm on an Offy intake, Clifford headers, Mallory coil, stock points ignition. These components would work on a 250 as well.
I'm currently in the process of installing my rebuilt other 292 block. Hopefully when the rainy season is over. Yes it is spendy, but that solid feeling of torque is worth it. V8s just don't last as long. Too many moving parts. I've killed a 327 and a 454 in only the last 10 years. If you factor in the longevity aspect, it evens out.

If you will read my posting I said a "GMC" 292--not a Chevy. Very hard to come by.
