What do Call This? Wheel Ring?

My K30's wheels currently have the chrome (stainless?) simulators on them. At some point I plan on getting rid of them and running the steel wheels powder coated. the black ring in the pic below is holding the covers on right now, and it looks like I think I need to keep it (or something like it) - my wheels do not have a recess for the acorn lug nut, but the ring does.

What are my options of cleaning up the looks of the ring? What have you guys done when going back to the steel wheels without covers?

What is the proper name of the ring? I am not sure what to call it, other than ugly...

Whatever its called its factory and you need to keep it. Power coat it black and it will look good.

Howdy neighbor, exit 100 here. I lived in that neck of the woods in the early 90s.

I tinkered with the "ring" tonight - the rusty thing encasing the steel ring looks like part of the chrome simulators, a good wrap with a hammer and it popped off. A bit of sandpaper cleaned it up pretty good. When do the wheels I will have them coated too.

Exactly. The thin piece encasing the 'ring' was for the simulator. The ring allows compression against the steel wheel using the acorn style lug nuts. The ring is the factory item.

Like mentioned, a contrasting color that compliments the wheels works or even the same color depending on what 'look' you're trying to achieve. I just stripped mine down & they'll get rattle can black since IMO it's not worth powder coating (since it's the 1st thing that the lugnuts contact & will come right back off when tightening).

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
