Window gap at the corner

Hey folks need some help here with my 59 Chevy truck build. I'm in the process of removing rust by replacing the corners, steps and hinge pillar pockets and have noticed that there's a gap at the lower corner of the windshield on the passenger side.

I've completed the drivers side and didn't notice weather the gap was there when I started the passenger side. The step and all the front corner have been removed and I don't know what the hell I was thinking but I didn't brace the cab before cutting the parts out.

Now I'm looking at a gap on the lower corner of the windshield I can stick my finger in. The rubber is still on the glass. I really don't know what to do at this point or if it's a problem at all. Is this a trouble area that all 55 thru 59 trucks have? Or do I have a real problem that needs a fix right now?

Any help would be great right now.

A pic would be a BIG help to show what you have going on.

Re: Window gap at the corner

that is bad I have issues with the door pinch between windshield and the back of cab
but the roof looks straight
.
I have read here the fit and finish on these (Task Force) truck were very poor
that and your windshield gasket shrunk makes your issue look bad....Sp

Re: Window gap at the corner

Sorry I should have loaded the pics. Anyway as you can see I have the step and front corner removed and I've had to repair the lower latch pillar at the bottom. The drivers side window doesn't look bad but there is a gap on the passenger side. I'm guessing that I either it's not an issue or I need to find a restoration shop(which would be a tuff call as there are no shops locally)

Again thanks for any input.

Re: Window gap at the corner

I would be concerned with that, seems hard to not notice it. I would put the doors back on to see how the gaps are ,not that they were tight to start with but to see if the cab indeed twisted or if it maybe just a really bad fitting windshield.
I would proceed with caution and make sure doors are fitting up and if not put in some anchor points where you can get some ratcheting straps in to pull things back in line.
I know with the big back window there is less support up top to start with.

Unhappy Re: Window gap at the corner

Well that's where the problem starts. I can't hang the door because I've removed the lower door hinge pocket. It was a major rust area. I've also welded pull chains to to both the top and bottom corners to see if pulling them closer would decrease the window corner, it didn't.

It looks like I'll have to put the new step and corners in and hope it can be fixed afterward. I sure should have braced the door better.

I think I would try to jack the cab back into place before welding anything.

Re: Window gap at the corner

If the drivers side is done I would try the fit of the door there and also set the cab back down on the frame ,with it sitting on the frame squared that should show where things are high/ low.
May be necessary to undo some work on the drivers side to get it to set square. but nothing that can't be fixed .

Re: Window gap at the corner

fix the hinge pocket and hang both doors then check your gaps
chances are your going to need to jack your cab diagonaly to the windshield corner
i damaged my cab in a similar fashion

and yes, you could have saved yourself the trouble by bracing the cab before cutting the structure out

Re: Window gap at the corner

my 57 is like that, never noticed it till I replaced the windshield and rubber gasket after breaking the windshield. My truck is not rusty except for lower rear cab corners and drivers lower hinge pocket.

I thought it was the new re-pop windshield myself.

Re: Window gap at the corner

my 59 had a similar problem. old windshield fit fine, but when the new one went it there was a slight gap at both corners. it wasn't so bad that it required metal work, just some extra black silicone in both corners.

Re: Window gap at the corner

Hey guys thanks for the helpful info. Let me say that when I finished the drivers side I did hang the door only to find out that the hinge was also bad. After I replaced that the door fit and closed pretty good. I'm thinking that I'll roll the chassis back in and drop the body back down on it and see if I can fix it from there
