Speedo cable question ..Help

Replaced my speedo cable and it did not work..Gears are all fine just checked..I just noticed that after I greased cable maybe I have it on backwards so please help with this dumb question..The end that does not have the little retainer..does it go to transmission or to speedometer///Thanks..........Mkae any sense????///

Um the only retainer I can think of is on the back of the speedometer, but there isnt a retainer inside the cable at the speedo so it must be towards the tranny then. its just a square receiver that fits into a square hole, are you sure the cneter of the cable slid into the speedo properly?

On a 72 there is a plastic clip that holds it to the speedo head, and a scew on fitting on the tranny.
