How much for an '86 SWB Silverado

Hey guys, it has been many years since I owned one of these trucks and I was looking for some help in determining the value of a 1986 Chevy SWB, Silverado. It belongs to my nephew and has been setting up for years. He removed the motor from it with plans to install a souped up motor and never got around to it. There was really nothing wrong with the motor that came out of it. The body is straight as an arrow with absolutely no dings or dents in it. Has the original white paint which is showing some surface rust in several areas, but is solid metal.
He wants to get 2500 for it the way it is, but I'm not sure if I want to go that much considering.
I would really appreciate it if some of you could give some idea what it might be worth.

Did he pull the motor and the tranny? I assume the motor is selling with the truck?
$2500 sounds high to me for a project truck. I paid $2800 for an 87 4x4 that runs fine with nothing missing. Of course, this varies by region and in your area that might be a deal.

Surface rust is not always skin deep. I would crawl around under that truck and check the usual suspects - cab corners, fender corners, inside frame and inside bed box cross rails, under carpet at kick panels, etc.

$1500 will get you a running, rust free, but needs work (like air conditioning, tires, etc.) here in the desert. But, that would be a long bed 2WD.

Short beds, especially 4WD, in driving condition, needs work would be about $2500 - with no engine installed I would say you are back down to $1500, especially with "surface rust", but it would sell quick.
