Brand new transmission detent cable too long...

Hello all. Just got a new detent (kickdown) cable for my '81 GMC Sierra Classic. It's an H code 305 (4-barrel carb), tied to a TH350 trans. the end of the kickdown cable goes past the clip by abour 1/2-3/4." The truck seems to kick down fine, but there is still a little bit of lag when the pedal is to the floor. Does my motor have the wrong cable bracket on it, or is it bent? I'll take a couple pictures soon here... I'm just looking for some advice at this point on what's up. It goes like snot now though, it was an absolute pig before...
