1987 1/2 ton PU.....help

I found your site while looking for info on my 1987 Chevy 1/2 ton PU that will not start. If I prime the carb (TBI) it will run breifly. The fuel system has no power. The fuel pumps (duel tanks), the fuel relay on the fire wall under the hood......nothing. The ECMB fuze keeps blowing. The thing is, up untill last week it ran fine
Think my ECM is bad?

Blowing the fuse then you need to start by tracing wires. ECMB I think is the Fuel pump fuse or the Fuse that controls the solonoids and relays. Look for shorts. Look EVERYWHERE. you have wires all op on the intake for the EGR control solonoid, you have wires that are hanging on the back of the motor. . Pull up and check all of that. There is wired close to the exhaist manifolds and I would double check in those areas.

From there it's time to get a hold of a shopp manual. The haynes is ehh...has the basics. If you hit your local Library with a pocket full of dimes you can get some of the better info from the manuals they have on Microfisch.

The manual have a good set of diagonostic procedures. You do not need anything but a Volt Ohm meter and test light to work on that FI. You do need the instructions.

Normally I would be real suspect of the Fuel pumps but it sounds like both are blowing the fuse and the likely hood of both being bad at the same time is pretty slim. Has to be somewhere else if you have the samy symptoms on both pumps. Check your tank swtich as well .

thanks for the tips......I bought the Haynes but the wiring schematics are weak. Our small town with a small Library may not have the goods, but I'll try.......good idea.

Check the wires behind your glove box that plug into the ECM. Make sure the plugs are in tight. Look for wear on the wires where they might be shorting. Also, check the ECM ground that bolts to the thermostat housing.

Thanks, still hunting. Trying to figure out what the ECMB fuze/ circut is....I think it is the fuel relay .......?????

Good luck with this, I never have good luck finding what is causing my TBI to suck. When it gets above freezing here I've got to figure out why I'm not getting any gas to mine. Like Grim said, look for a short somewhere. Tracking down electrical problems is never fun. Hope you get it figured out soon. Let us know.

BTW, I experienced something similar once, and it was water in the gas. If that's the case, sell your truck, I'm still battling that issue.
