84 wiper delay module same as 85-86?

I have a Silverado 1984 with the factory delay wipers in the column. I only get lo/hi, so I went to the dealer to see if I could get a new module that sits under the column. The rep looked it up and said 84 is no longer available. He looked up later years and said they could order an 85-86 delay module. He said it should work because 84-86 use the same delay wiper switch part number. My question is, what is different about 84 that it has a different part number for the module and will the new 85-86 work in my 84 without burning out? Thanks.

They look the same but not sure about the function.

The dealer rep said they probably revised something in the circuity to make it work better but it sounds like he was just guessing.

Would not surprise me but some here may know more than I do about this. GM parts people should be able to access a parts history to see if a part has been revised to a different number.

The rep said the 1984 number wasn't superseded so that's why I wasn't sure the newer one would work correctly.

What are your options at this point? Seems like a used one might be the way to go. You can have mine if you pay for the ride or probably get one locally for about the same price as postage, especially if you bundle it with some other used parts that you may need.

I may take you up on that offer. Seems to be slim pickens in the wrecking yards, one place laughed when I said what year. I was like huh, and he said that if its older then 10, they crush it. Is there a way to test the switch to see if its working? Dealer wanted over $100 for just the in column switch.

Re: 84 wiper delay module same as 85-86?

Around here they leave 'em in the yard a week or two then crush. They said they run out of room if they don't. I know the wiper switches are expensive. I try to keep new ign.,dimmer, etc. on my shelf but can't afford wiper switch but really never needed to replace one. Don't know how to bench test one, just plug it in and try it is all I know.

Download the wiring diagrams and look at them. If the 84 has the same pinout as the 85 & 86 unit I'd try it. The GM wiper systems switch the ground not the hot.
