first water pump change, question
Ok, changing out the water pump in my 1987 silver ado v10/k10 350. I have the original removed ready to install the new pump.
Question is with the four bolts that bolt the pump to the block, do they enter water jackets and need thread sealant? if so is that the case for all of them? what sealant is best regular thread sealant or do I need blue rtv? thanks guys |

Re: first water pump change, question
Yea, they all are open to the water jackets, you have to use sealant. I've always used pipe thread goop, gob it on the threads of the bolts and screw em in.

There 1 that is lower on drivers side but putting some sealant all all is ok to make sure. Its easy enough to check for future projects blow air in the hole.

Re: first water pump change, question
Oops -I did not use thread sealant on the bolts when I changed mine. I don't see leaks - what does that mean? I did not see evidence of thread sealant on the bolts when I changed mine - it looked like a factory GM pump. Should I drain the coolant and remove the bolts, one by one, and add sealant to the bolts? If I do that, do I have to leave the coolant out of the engine for a day before refilling with coolant? If so, what type of sealant should I use?

It may not happen right away as the engine isn't under pressure. |

Re: first water pump change, question
I put permatex high temp sealant it's WHITE was this was you was talking about? it's just regular ole sealant NOT rtv which I hate using I view rtv is a billy bob way to seal things up. for future reference was the high temp needed? or the reg white tube with blue writing on it be fine? I figured to be safe why not but curious.
GUYS.... let the gasket do what the dang gasket is meant for no rtv is needed on gaskets!!!! I hate seeing passed owners of my vehicles using that crap. |

Re: first water pump change, question
No sealant required, bolts are INSIDE the gasket holes.
