Re: Does anyone know how to decode a Protecto Plate?
Well let's take a stab at it. Comparing it to Chevrolet POP's, it may be this here:
RXG87 would be your engine number; should be stamped on engine. TRM28 would be your transmission number; should be stamped on trans 3.54 is the rear gear ratio. ID15048 should be/not sure, your rear axle identification. 400-0000 don't know CE134-TZ52339 is your VIN. GMCN, sure its GMCN and not GMCT (with a little "T")? GMC Truck division

Re: Does anyone know how to decode a Protecto Plate?
Yup it's like you typed it. Thought there might be typo's in there.
I have a 1967 & 1970 GMC POP, both different in layout from each other. But yours, yours is a mishmash of both 67 & 70 styles that I have! I only have literature for Chevrolet POP's information, and then only up to 1969. Can you tell me what you have for an engine, carb, and transmission in it? If its still all original that is. If you look on the engine where the engine number is stamped, you should see that number on your POP. Same with your transmission. At least that much could be gleaned to match on the POP. Oh, 400-0000, is this the engine? Do you have a 400 CU V-8? I notice on my GMC POP it has 3070000. Too much of a coincidence maybe. Wonder if GMC puts the engine size on it where Chev doesn't. I'm short on time now but was wondering what your engine & trans was last night. I can kindof see it in the literature but not sure.

Re: Does anyone know how to decode a Protecto Plate?
Okay back again.
I think I get it now for how GMC POP's are done. I learned a lot here about GMC and Chevrolet POP differences! 400-0000 Is your engine 396/400/402 V8, just like the SPID says. Don't know the purpose of the 0000. The 1970 GMC POP I have is "3070000" for a 307 V8 so I think they all/most have the 0000. CE134-TZ52339 Is your VIN Number C = 2WD E = V8 1 = 1/2T 34 = Fleetside box - = No state certification code T = built at Tarrytown Z = 1970 52339 = serial number RX is Rear aXle It is RPO Code G87 that matches that on the SPID sticker as a positraction rear end. The 1970 GMC POP I have lists its rear axle as "RXSTD373" which you can interpret as STD=standard, 3.73 ratio (ie nothing special). So if you have an optioned rear axle, they must put the RPO Code of that option on your POP like yours has instead of the transmission model number. 354 = The gear ratio of 3.54 ID15048 I am guessing on this one. But I think if you where to look on the rear axle axle tube (front or rear of it, I don't know) I think you may find the number 15048 stamped in the tube. ID = Identification and the axle is number 15048. Just guessing on this. TR-M28 This is like the RX rear axle. TR=TRansmission You have a non-standard, optional transmission, RPO Code M28 the New Process 435 4-speed close ratio transmission; otherwise if it was a standard transmission, it would say maybe like TRSM326 for a Muncie SM326 3-speed. GMCN GMC is the division of course, GMC. N on the end of it: Has me stumped. I was thinking the build month code, but if was present, should be on the same line as the axle code, only way to the right. I have a 1967 GMC POP with a little "T" after the letters GMC, which I am going guess means "GMC Truck Division", but yours is a full height "N". And the 1970 GMC POP I have has nothing behind the letters GMC. Ooops. I do have a booklet for 1970 POP!. It says that the build month code for November 1969 is "N". I can't make out the month on the Door Decal photo, does that say "11/69" by chance ???? Your SPID of engine/trans/rear end/ratio all matches the 1970 Chevrolet Dealer book in that the New Process 435CR 4-speed close ratio is RPO Code M28 and this includes Dana rear axle with 3.54 ratio, Maximium Traction G87 is available only when 400 engine and 4-speed transmission are ordered. I'm wondering if you have a semi-floating Dana 60 in there for an axle (ie just like a 3/4T Dana 60 only with out the hubs on the end of the axles). That's all I've got.

Re: Does anyone know how to decode a Protecto Plate?
First Line:
03 = Paint code, 503 LIGHT GREEN CE147F150165 is your VIN as you know. R = Carburetor code, R = Rochester Second Line: V0328W8 = Engine Code broken down as: V = Flint,MI 03 = Month of March 28 = Day of month, the 28th W8 = type of vehicle. I think you might have this wrong. Please double check on this. It should be 2 alphabetic letters. There is no "W8" listed, but if it is "WB", the truck is a 307 V-8 3-Spd. or 4-spd CE10 or CE20 truck.HA0327W = Rear Axle Id. Should be stamped on the axle tube as I understand it? HA = C10 3.73 Ratio, 3500 lbs. axle. 0327W I'm guessing is the unique ID of the axle. Can't find meaning to the "W".N = Build Month Code; N = November 1967 Third Line: 27C13 = Transmission number. Should be stamped on it as I understand it. This may be a shorted version of the stamped number. Maybe.

MBrumar67Chevy - I used to own your truck
I realize this thread is now years out of date, but I happened to see it, and I wanted to let you know that I used to own your turquoise '67 with VIN# CE147F150165. Not sure if you still have it, but I hope so.
I reluctantly sold the truck in 2003 because of my divorce. It was sold to an older gentleman in South Lyon, MI, and he may be the one who sold it to you. When I acquired the truck some years earlier, the clutch was shot. It originally had a 283 V8 but it was tired. I put in all new clutch components and drove it for awhile before finally deciding to invest in a new Goodwrench crate 350 engine. The old 283 was clattering under load and burning lots of oil. I dropped in the brand-new crate 350 in 2002 and had no problems after that. It was a GREAT truck that I drove to and from work, and even on some long trips. I wish I still had it, but I'm glad to see it is with someone who appreciates it. Keep me posted if you can. I really love knowing that truck is still out there. |
