What is the est mechanical fuel pump for my 1972?
Time to replace the fuel pump. I want to keep a mechanical unit. I bought an Airtex from Advanced Auto but I heard those suck.
Will it be OK? Is there a better pump to go with? |

Re: What is the est mechanical fuel pump for my 1972?
I just checked on NAPA site, and they list Air-Tex. I am having a problem with an Air-Tex on my 72 Cutlass 350. The consensus from the Forums at Cliff's High Performance is that Air-Tex tends to put out too much pressure, that causes flooding after shut down. I can't find anything but Air-Tex for that car. NAPA lists only Air-Tex on their site for both the Cutlass and the Pick-up. Maybe they can order something else in the actual store. All the other places I have checked also only list Air-Tex.
Any other ideas? |

Airtex electric pumps are garbage I do know that. I bought a NOS AC on eBay for $16.

Try Rock Auto if you can't find one locally. They always seem to list several manufacturers for every part I've looked at there.
I bought a carter pump from them a couple years ago. It came in a Pierce box. I have a 350 with q-jet and have had no problems at all. Good luck.

Re: What is the est mechanical fuel pump for my 1972?
I have sold a billion Air-Tex pumps in my 25 year history of selling autoparts.
Airtex had an issue awhile back with their Electric Fuel Pumps. But as far as Mechanical pumps go, Airtex is fine. They are about the same as everyone else out there. Mechanical pumps really don't have the problems that electric pumps do. The rubber diaphragm inside is really the only major thing that can go wrong with them. I have personally used about 5 or 6 Airtex fuel pumps and never had an issue. If you have it already... use it. I will be surprised if you have any issues.
