What are they made of, stainless steel? Had anyone had any experience painting them? Thanks

Re: AD door handles

Would of thought they would be cast then chromed, so would think you can scrape Chrome off and primer then paint.

Take the chrome off and paint, they are not stainless.

Re: AD door handles

I've blasted all the chrome off, they are not very magnetic. A magnet was attracted to it but wouldn't hold itself to the handle.

Re: AD door handles

It's hard to say what alloy may have included in the casting process. Some steel alloys are non magnetic. Manganese for example.

Re: AD door handles

They are simply "pot metal" I believe.

Re: AD door handles

That's just a generic term, and doesn't describe anything, except possibly a poor material grade.

That makes sense, I have never thought about it any deeper. Edgimacate me if you can. What is the proper name and toss out a couple of examples as to where one is used over another and why. I am thinking some are harder than others?

Yup, pretty much describes what those handles are cast of:

So in other words all the handles, knobs, mouldings that are "pot metal" on cars over the years is realistically called "pot metal" and any slight different recipe is a moot point in this discussion.

Re: AD door handles

It's mostly Zinc, isn't it? non-ferrous.

Re: AD door handles

The question was, "why are the handles weakly magnetic?" "Pot metal" does not answer that question.

Re: AD door handles

According to the Wiki article, one of the possible ingredients in pot metal may be iron. Probably added to the door handles for strength? A slight iron content would explain the weakly magnetic thing.

Re: AD door handles

A natural magnet may not stick to pot metal but a rare earth magnet, may show a light pull to a high zinc content..
For instance a natural magnet has no pull to 999.9 pure silver but a rare earth magnet will show slight attraction.

Just a thought
