Re: suicide knob
I don't think the idea was ever to make steering easier. It's just a way to steer with one hand and another way to hold the wheel. You can't get a vehicle to steer any easier than both hands gripping the rim pushing and pulling. They are a cool accessory, but are illegal and called suicide knobs for a reason. They are most dangerous w/o power steering, because terrain can steer the wheels. I'm not telling anyone what to do. I'm just saying what I know.
I had a truck (no p/s) with a racing wheel on it. You know, three spokes with five wholes in them. I was wearing a Levi jacket and I don't button the cuffs. I was on rutty ground backing up to turn around when a brass cuff button fit itself right into one of those wholes and jammed my elbow down into my thigh so hard and fast it gave me one heck of a charlie horse. I can see how it could have been a broken wrist. That is the type of thing a suicide knob risks, only at multiple times the risk and in many other ways.

Re: suicide knob
I was under the impression it was there to allow you to steer with one hand and let you use your other hand to get friendly with the girl sittin next to you
