70 LWB carrier bearing

Yesterday while going down the road the carrier bearing on my truck broke loose. It made an awful damn racket. Finally got her home in once piece. I'm scratching my head on why this may have happened. I'm still getting use to the two piece drive shaft. So I will try to do some catch up reading this week. I've got to get my truck running. Its almost summer and I'm ready to have some fun.

Re: 70 LWB carrier bearing

The carrier bearing will go out from time to time just from age. They will also go out due to abuse or "hot rodding", like mine did a LOT. They are not to hard to change if the bolt that holds the front shaft to the middle u-joint shaft will come loose. Take the u-bolts loose from the axle and 2 bolts usually hold the carrier on then slip the shaft out of the transmission. Don't forget to block the wheels if the truck is not on stands.
