At first i thought i'd lost a wheel..........

On my way to work on the 1st of May, I had to stop at a 4 way intersection in a not too particularly safe part of town less than 5 blocks from work.
As I lifted my foot off the whoa pedal and started to press on the go pedal, the rear end started to buck and shake..... then... the right rear dropped... with a very hard THUNK!!!

I had been brought to a dead stop in the middle of the intersection. I got out to see what the frack happened and saw this.......

Re: At first i thought i'd lost a wheel..........

Needless to say what had happened is during the winter the rear end developed a leak and the right rear wheel bearing finally seized up on me and snapped the axle. So it now sits with the rear end on a jack stand looking like something old man Howard Stark was trying to create....

I hadn't noticed the leak because I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark and never noticed the oil puddles until way, way, way, too late.
And I never walked around the right rear of my ride before then either. It bent the hell outa my disc brake conversion caliper mount and snapped the caliper mount bolts clean off. the only thing keeping the wheel attached to the truck was the braided steel brake hose.

I saw a vid a couple of days ago where a burb on the interstate lost a rear wheel...it did a couple of 360's, tapped a car then hit the wall. You got lucky.

It bent the lip of the tube at the top so yeah, I'm gonna have to replace the whole assembly.

Considering I was just on the highway not 5 minutes before this doing almost 70.... I'd have to say I had a co-pilot of biblical proportions with me that day.
