Tailgate trunion hinge replacement

Yesterday I tried to install my tailgate with new (repro) trunion hinge parts (the part that bolts to the truck). The left hinge part is made very sturdy and gave me no trouble. When I slowly lowered the right side of the tailgate onto the trunion hinge part that is NOT ROUND (shaped to take the slotted hinge part on the tailgate) the hinge part that is NOT round bent so that I could not use it. Are all repros this flimsy? I could not even beat it back into some useable shape. I notice that Truck Shop of Orange CA offers to sell a NON-repro, GM part. Is the GM part that much better? I do not have a good original to look at. Does anyone sell a good repro part? Did I do something wrong when I installed the tailgate? Please help. I own a 1986 that I bought off Ebay last winter and this is the first 73-87 I have owned after owning (26) 67-72 trucks, so I am making a big change here. Thanks, George
