just sent my original am/fm off for conversion...
I sent it to Gary Tayman at Tayman Electrical to convert it to modern internals, iPod/XM/whatever inputs, subwoofer outputs, 180 watts total (i know, it's not actually 180w.) should have it back in about 3 or 4 weeks, so we'll see.

Let me know what you think when you get it back. I was going to do a custom autosound receiver but sounds like that would be a mistake.

yup, I'll definitely keep everyone posted. Looks like it's time to finish that heater/ac install and maybe do son custom kickpanels and speakers...

Re: just sent my original am/fm off for conversion...
Woo Hoo! Just rec'd my rebuilt radio a few moments ago!
So far, it looks like a very top quality job. It will be a little while before i get to test it, because i'll have to get new speakers, etc. First off, it's clean! Gary detailed it and put a nice coat of hammered alum. paint on it. no, wait. 2nd thought, it's just cleaned! that's the original paint, i guess. anyway... The chrome looks great (much better than my little phone camera shows.) The instructions are very clear and well written. The turn around was also very quick. All wires are bundled neatly, and it even includes a power out lead (which can be used for xm, cd, ipod power.) One little trick I had him do was to rewire the internal lamp, so that it now comes on with the dash lights, rather that with the radio's power-on function. The RCA inputs are installed neatly at the rear, and all original junk that's not being used has been removed. He adjusted and cleaned all mechanicals, and my FM should actually work now. This was a big purchase, and so far looks like it's worth it. also, if anyone is planning to do this, Gary Tayman sent me a coupon for $20 off a conversion to share with a friend, so if anyone wants it, pm me your address and i'll drop it in the mail. Please only let me know if you are really going to use it, because I do not want it to go to waste. anyway, some eye candy. c

How many speakers are you going to use?

Re: just sent my original am/fm off for conversion...
as far as speakers go, i'll start with 4. a couple components up front (kicks) and a couple in mid/back. eventually it'll be an additional woofer and some components in the rear when i get proper amps.
it ran about $375+ but i'm happy so far. i tried to install it, but the aftermarket center a/c vent behind dash plenum will not allow the original radio back in, so i have to order a repop original so it will fit.

Re: just sent my original am/fm off for conversion...
Checked out their website http://www.garytayman.com/stereo.htm
Looks great, and love the idea of running the original radio. Price is $385, not too bad considering it was $375 over 7 years ago. Will look to do it by the end of summer for my blazer. |

Re: just sent my original am/fm off for conversion...
I just got my Radio back from Gary Tayman... What a Great guy... I spent just a little time on the phone with him and he is probably the most accommodating suppliers I have had while building my 67 Chevy "3 Deuces"...
I can't wait until I can install it and get it working probably next year...

Re: just sent my original am/fm off for conversion...
I've been exchanging emails with Gary over the past week or two. I haven't decided yet, but he's quick to respond and seems very professional in the front end.
I'm leaning towards pulling the trigger
