A longhorn showed up today

Bought me a longhorn. it showed up today. it is a Cheyenne super big block. best optioned truck I ever had and I have owned several. this truck belonged to another member of this forum .don't know his name but I was hoping he sees this and gives me more history on the truck. maybe even tell me about any problems to expect. seems like a good unmolested truck . anyway I am very pleased with it. got rid of all my other trucks except my 69 swb cst which I will post pictures of soon.

Re: A longhorn showed up today

I love these Longhorns......especially the ones with the extra fuel tanks and upper & lower side trim.

The longer beds are somehow "more balanced" to me and you can haul longer materials.

Very clean, looks like the original paint can still be brought back to life. Ex. camper haulers usually require the least amount of work.

found it on Lubbock Texas craigslist. bought it sight unseen and had it shipped to me. I know one previous owner is a member here. maybe he will chime in and tell me more about it.

Re: A longhorn showed up today

trying to figure what gear ratio this truck is. between 50 to 60 mph this motor sounds like im doing 80 mph. what would be involved in changing to a more of a highway gear? are parts even available? going to give it a tune up this weekend and maybe change it to hei distributor . I cleaned and shined it up this week and it shines good except the top of bedsides.

Re: A longhorn showed up today

Your truck should have a 3:54 unless it was switched out somewhere along the line. If it had a 4:10 from the factory it'd show on the spid.

Re: A longhorn showed up today

had a 72 z28 that was changed to 4-10 this truck seems geared higher than that. can I just change the gears in this rear end?

Re: A longhorn showed up today

Nice truck! 4.10s in a camaro ill have a lower "effective" ratio than they would in your truck, due to the height of the tires. The taller tires will effect the first all drive ratio. I believe the 72 c20s have a dana 60 (?) If so, a variety of gear ratios is available.

Re: A longhorn showed up today

Imo one of the upgrades I would perform would be a factory tach in the instrument cluster. That way you could keep aN eye on the rpms. I did this in both my truck with oem parts.(aftermarket available as well,Although I have heard of issues with hei ignition and aftermarket tachs. I have hei and an oem tach in one truck with no issues.other. truck currently still has points.)

Alternately you could rig up an aftermarket tach on the column or under dash to get a idea of rpms.

Since its a new purchase, it might be a good idea to drain And refill all of your fluids, engine trans rear axle (don't forget power steering and brake fluid- I had a great uncle who was a schlumberger diesel mechanic, but that's a other subject). During rear axle service you will find two numbers stamped in the ring gear (43:14 or something to this effect) a little math (division) will give you your axle ratio.

On a side note, funny thing..my wife's kindle sux and thinks it's smarter than me and tries to auto correct things like tach to taco. Just read the post above and replace tach with taco. Ooh, that reminds me, it time for breakfast. Guess what I'm having. Not pancakes.
