Mini tub for 1954

Does any vendor sell a prefab mini tub for these trucks?

Re: Mini tub for 1954

After the overwhelming responses to my question It occurred to me what to do. I don't care for the typical tubs sold by Summit etc, not really the right sizing for what I want. Then I looked at the 67-72 trucks and those tubs, which are available repop will be about the right size, height and length. I'll cut them down width wise as I'm not wanting to install big meats, just need an inch or two extra on the inside to keep my tires from occasionally rubbing on the bed side. This is the first early truck I have owned and I am surprised at the narrow width for tires in the rear, I only have 235 tires and they rub when the body leans.

Re: Mini tub for 1954

Why not take stock rear fenders, cut them to the width you need, weld an inside face on and mount them. That should look fantastic and give people something to talk about.

I have Kumho 255/65SR16s on 16" x 7" rims on the back of mine. With 8.2" of tread on the ground and 10.2" sidewall to sidewall, I think they look pretty good. I tested the same on a 16 x8" rim, but at .5' more sidewall to sidewall, it was starting to get tight.

You may want more on the ground than me, though....

First pic is of tests I did during the winter with a 255 vs a 235

The other two pics are as it is today -

Wasn't sure that shape would fit you with the early truck, but since you mentioned it, here are mine on a 2nd series with 3" inches taken out of the width.

My 235's are on 8" wheels so that may be an issue compared to 7" wheels. They are 9.6" wide (tires) according to Cooper. My tires are perfectly centered in the tub and I have 1/2" clearance on both sides and I will rub occasionally on the inside, it does it on a right turn into a inclined driveway, the body leans to the left causing the inside rub. However I also experienced some constant rub on the freeway the other day which is not good. The truck is bagged so the ride height is not always the exact same. I figure to just add a 2-3" or so inside tub and be done with the problem.

Looking good, do you know the height from the bottom flange to the top of the tub?

Re: Mini tub for 1954

I went with some from Dennis Carpenter. They were intended for Ford trucks. I liked the overall shape. They are expensive (like $275 or something) and since my bed is shallower than stock, I even trim off quite a bit of the tub. They are 2 3/4" wide. I know that they offered wider ones as well.

Here are some pics.

I tried to find them on his web site but had no luck. You might try calling them.

There's a company called Bowtie Bits that sells a fiberglass set that is 4" wide.

Thanks, I bought that set. I wasn't so sure about plastic but they are made to fit and have an inside flange to bolt to bed side and the bottom flange will bolt/screw into the bed floor. This is what I was looking for, something to do little to no fabrication. These cost $230 with shipping, the 67-72 steel tubs would have cost $180 delivered but I would have to splice them and weld to my bed side

Those look like a piece of cake to install. Neat.

Playing catch up here, where did you get your tubs. I've been looking on and on for a couple years for a set for my 1954. Thanks

I was looking for tubs myself and came across an old set of rear fenders that I'm going to turn into tubs. I'll have to cut them down some but the idea is to take the drivers side fender and use it for the passenger side tub and passenger side on the drivers side. Usually the fenders rust on the bottom so they aren't useable to some people and you can pick them up cheap.

Sure would like to see photos of your work when you do this. In the past, I thought about doing the something you've mentioned. Good luck.
