Got my truck running! But...

Last fall, after finishing all my work on my 65, I couldn't get the truck to run on on its own gas. It would start on a shot down the carb, but wouldn't keep going. Took the lines off, cranked, and found the fuel pump was ok after I had gas on cranking. Problem was an age cracked line between the hard line sections after the pump. Replaced that today, and managed to get it running. Badly.

It will start, but only run if I choke it almost all the way. Additionally, it will surge every second like I am pressing and releasing the gas pedal. If I open up the choke, it will stall out.

I like rebuilding carbs, so I'm thinking of starting with that (since I don't know what the internals are like).

Does the surging sound like the fuel bowl isn't filling, and it is surging with the pulses from the fuel pump? I have an old new made in US carter pump that I could try. I do run non-ethanol 91 in it.

Haven't done any tuning yet. Plugs/points/wires/rotor/cap are all as I got it. I did, however, crank up the idle screw to try and get it running. I also bottomed the mix screw, then backed it off two turns.

Thoughts and opinions welcomed! I'm excited to get this roadworthy, my YOM plates should arrive back to me soon.

Feed it from a known source, such as outboard motor gas tank. Then you might find out what isn't flowing.

On mine, everything from the pump back was clogged.

I'm thinking possibly vaccum.

Replace the two hoses in the fuel line, one is under the cab near the tank and the other is on the fuel pump. My truck acted the same way and the hose near the tank was collapsed.

Good call, I've replaced all the rubber except the one under the tank! I bought extra just in case.

I'll check/replace vacuum lines as I go through the tune up process.

Time to dig out the manual to find idle speed and timing!

x2.. spray carb cleaner around the manifold and carb. The idle will go up on a leak.

Forgot to mention that it was running ok off of a 5 gal can plumbed into the pump when I bought it due to no gas tank. I have since installed a factory location tank. I suspect the rubber under the cab floor.

I see you're in Ontario. I don't know how far you are from the Detroit border. I have a gas tank that I'm going to give away out of my 66' if you need it. The tank is only 2 years old.

Very kind offer, and much appreciated. This community never ceases to amaze me with the collective generosity that is displayed. However, before I had the truck shipped up to Canada, I had a new tank delivered to the seller, and it is now installed in the truck.

Detroit's about 8 hours drive from Ottawa, btw. We're close to Montreal. Only 45 north of upstate NY, though.

Quick update:

Replaced the short section of rubber under the cab. It had previously been replaced with 3/8s, so I changed it out for 5/16ths. Got it running a bit better, and took it out for a quick drive. Made it through all gears, and ran it at about 50mph. The more I drove, the better it got. At first, it would only run if it was choked. By the time I got home (only 5 min driving), I had the choke at least half open.

I put my dwell tach on it, it's idling around 1100, and dwell is 35 degrees. I'll keep at it!
