Speedometer fixing (3 on the tree transmission)

Need help fixing my speedometer
I replaced the Speedo cable.Do I need to replace the ratio adapter? or what
Eventually i'll need to but a new odometer gear in there to get it fixed
It really bothers me that mine doesn't work, every other gauge does but this one does not

Re: Speedometer fixing (3 on the tree transmission)

assuming you have your truck moving

does the top end of the cable turn when moving?
if not the cable is too short (not engaged) or the plastic driven gear is stripped

you can use a drill to test the speedo by removing the speedo and turning the speedo with a square drive

i just went thru calibrating mine

Re: Speedometer fixing (3 on the tree transmission)

It is moving or will be with this new carb that I ordered

Where is the gear in the transmission?
I'd like to fix it myself

Re: Speedometer fixing (3 on the tree transmission)

As Ogre said the truck has to be physically moving for the speedometer to read or you have to have the rear wheels off the ground and run it in gear to see if it works.

First you have to make sure the speedometer gears in the trans are turning the cable so it can make the speedometer work. That means driving down the road and watching to see if the cable turns or hooking another speedometer that will connect to the cable housing up and hanging under the dash and drive down the road and see if it works.

Then you have to figure out why your speedometer doesn't work if it doesn't or how far it is off if it does work.

The best and safest way to tell how accurate or inaccurate your speedometer is is to use a hand held GPS and drive down a straight road at highway speed and note the differences Say 50 mph on the speedometer in the truck and then get the reading off the GPS and calculate the percentage of difference in which direction.

Then you go to a chart that is on a page like this one http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...FZSCfgodczkA3A
scroll to the proper transmission and figure out what changes need to get the speedometer as close to right as you can. There is no need to worry about that until you have a working speedometer and odometer though.

Re: Speedometer fixing (3 on the tree transmission)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-1959-62-...6a965d&vxp=mtr
is this what I need?

Thank you for the information the truck doesn't run right now but I have tried it in the past when it did
run well and the needle did not even move an inch. Do I need to by another ratio adapter or how do I
go about fixing the plastic gear in the transmission, I hope it is not taking the whole thing out and then
installing it
