Re: 65 no brake lights

I would check the brake switch. Might not be engaging or might just need replacing.

1) did you check the ground to the tail lights?
2) wiring for the brake lights is routed through the turn signal switch. Maybe you have an issue in there?

Here's a wiring diagram I found posted in a thread by ACK and a link to another thread with a full wiring diagram.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: 65 no brake lights

Might be lucky and the wires going to the brake light switch are disconnected or the brake switch just needs an adjustment. Start with those two easy things, then you'll have to systematically use a multimeter and check for power starting at the switch and working to the rear at the bulb.

Re: 65 no brake lights

Check to see if you have power to the brake light switch (in and out) if you DO and the turn signals WORK (but the brake lights don't) then you have a problem in the turn switch

Sounds like a ground, the 2 screws that hold the buckets in need cleaned or turned to connect better could be,

Re: 65 no brake lights

alright i replaced the turn signal switch and i am still having an issue with my rear tail lights and no brake lights. issue with turn signals is it doesn't matter if right turn signal or left turn signal i get both sides in the rear flashing. the front will flash correctly.

Are you using stock turn signal switch or and aftermarket one like a Signal Stat 900?

Thanks,

Re: 65 no brake lights

stock... but i have been thinking today if the previous owner didn't have them hooked up correctly? and maybe to an emergency flasher? but i dont see any way to turn emergency flashers on. or could it be a bad flasher? also noticed when following the wires back the grounds are spliced together and 1 single wire go back to the same point in the cab. so would it be possible that because they aren't ran separately that could be causing both to flash?

I had the same problem with my 62, someone had connected one of the turn signal leads to the outbound side of the brake light switch...it was actually spliced in to the 3 wire plug going thru the firewall that feeds the tail/brake lights. So when the turn signal got activated it flashed both brake lights. this plug is located just above the gas pedal about 6 inches.

i dont see the plug you mention pappy the wires go from the tail lights to the fuse block. but looking at the kwik wiring instruction i believe the previous owner didnt wire them up correctly. seems he wired #29 to the negative side of the tail lights. kwik instructions are if using 1 bulb do not use #29 wire. i believe i need to disconnect #29 wire and ground the tail lights. i will be trying this tomorrow after work

Re: 65 no brake lights

there is no stock wiring to or from "the negative side of the taillights" so I'm not sure what you have. do you mean the #29 wire is spliced to one of the wires coming from the taillight? if so and this #29 wire is a ground then yes, you do need to disconnect it. as 64chevtruck mentioned, the lights ground through the attachment screws and this is often a problem spot

mehoff, the wires carrying the current signals for turn, brake, and running lights go from the turn signal connector to the taillights (through the firewall plug) not to the fuse block.

Re: 65 no brake lights

I had that same issue with the turn signals both flashing. I had taken my wire connectors completely apart to clean all the terminals. I had two wires reversed in the double curved connections from the turn signal module on the steering column. The problem was the color was not very good anymore. reversed the wires in the connector and everything works as it should.
