widening steel wheels

How wide can I go front and rear with everything stock? Inner fenders, rear wheel tubs, everything is factory. But I'll be lowering it 2 and 4. 72 2wd 1/2 ton lwb. I'd like to 7 or 8 inch wheels in the front, 10 inch in the rear if possible .Thanks for any input.

if you have the proper backspace should b no problem at all// I did a cion with the same drop and used 8"in front and 10 in the rear with a 4.5 inch backspace on both without any problems at all

I have a friend that had a 67 or 68 that he had 12 inch rally wheels on the back. you will have no trouble with 8's and 10's I'd say. Jim

I have 2 15x9 custom stock rims.

Yeah it seems it did stick out , He had found a place in Memphis TN to stretch out the wheels and he had some 12's and even tried some 14's but I think it was a failed project and he stuck with the 10's. Back then though it didn't look out of place to have tire out past the fender. Jim

Yea that makes sense for the hot rod days. I won't mine at least flush, with no rubbing. Don't think I'll go much wider ten. Maybe smaller if they'll rub with the stock rearend

If you don't lower the rear 10s will fit fine. They fill out the well and (the tread) don't stick out. 10" looks good, till you get into lowering (looks good if fits), then it's real close and depends on tire and backspace. I'm doing 8" all around with same size rubber so I can rotate, 4/6 drop. But, for around town having fun I want a pair of 10" with drag radials on the rear.

Thanks Tim, sounds like I'll need to do some checking with a 4" drop inthe rear. Might just go with 8 and be safe.

Yeah, I had 10s on the back of a '78 SWB, don't recall tire size but were wide. I had a drop kit and couldn't install till I lowered it (with a Rancho flip-kit). I've had 10s on lowered trucks with more backspace.

I agree, 4 of the same wheel is the way to go. Even more so on lowered trucks cause you see less of the wheels.

15x8 stock rims is the easiest way to go.

I you want 2 15X9 for the back I can hook you up.

You can buy off the shelf 15 x 8 5 on 5s from Wheel Vintiques.

I have 10s on the back of my 68 step-side with about 3" drop and they don't scrub.

I also have M/T Sportsman 29x12.50s and the tires do stick out from the outer edge of the fender about 1" on each side. The fender is only about an inch or 1.5" above the tire and you would think they scrub but they don't.

I did have some street-tread 31x10.50s on there and they didn't stick out at all. They stretched out on the 10" wheels though. Those 10.50 tires are really for 8 or 8.5" wheels.

It's also a 5-lug 71-72 rear-end which I think is a little wider than the earlier 67-70s and the wheels have 4 or 4.5 backspacing.

I have some pics on here somewhere but not from a good angle to see how close the tires are.

I saw those Tim, look real nice. Not cheap though! I found a tire and wheel shop today that well widen mine for 30 bucks a wheel. So I think I'll go 15x6 in the front and 15x8 in the rear..I think it'll look pretty good.

Mine is the stock 72 5 lug, with 15x6 GM wheels. Not sure on backspacing though

Tom... I am running 15x10 with a 4.25 BS on the rear and 15x8 on the front with 3.75 BS... I am dropped 5.5" front and 7" rear... my wheel tuck in nicely... now with that said the 67 Rear end is 1" narrower that the 69-72 but that should not make them stick out from the wheel well...

Good job Keith. That looks really good. I want to center to be further back. So I assume the cut out the centers and move them back with the new material added in the back.

Fronts are 235/70, rears are 295/50... on the front though I am probably going to change to 235/60... for me it is just a hair too much sidewall....
