Ram Horns and Alt Bracket

On my 67 C10 I now have new ram horn exhaust manifolds that do not have the alternator mount built into the front edge of the left side. My old one that did have the mount broke and leaked badly at the crack.

My old bracket bolted to the water pump and the left exhaust manifold - he bottom of the alternator bolted to that. There was also a adjustment arm that went from the intake manifold to the top of the alternator.

How do I set up my alternator now? I see some folks have a bracket that bolts to the front of the left head using the 2 holes there. Is that a factory part? Or after market?

I have a short water pump and a 1975 (I think) 350 that was installed by the PO. My crank pulley is a 3 groove using the single add on pulley.

Any suggestions, alternative mounting thoughts, or part numbers would be appreciated.

Make your own bracket that bolts to the head and reaches the original manifold mounting point. Should be straight forward with some 1/4" steel plate and a little gusseting.

Are rams horn manifolds with the alternator mounting boss specific to 1967? My 1971 has and uses the alternator mounting boss on the manifold. But, I also know the engine is not original to the truck.

i think theyre on the 64-66 ones with a 283 also

I like Davidf's idea, otherwise I'm thinking you need a 72 style like I have that bolts to the head only.
I'm thinking a flat piece of 1/4" mild steel cut in a shape to catch the cylinder head bolts and extend to the alt lower bolt axis then drill through the outer bracket through the plate, install necessary spacer and you should be good to go.

But I'd for sure attempt to make a brace from the head to the rear of the alt. Or, a bracket off the front 2 exhaust manifold bolts, like maybe use some studs in the manifold and bolt a bracket to them, bend it around or weld onto it and line it up.

Is this the bracket you are talking about?

If so it's a stock item. It was on my 307 and 305. Nothing bolted to the Ram Horn.

For around $45.00, you can get the correct alt bracket (upper and lower with correct bolts) for the exhaust manifolds you have now. 67-68 had the boss for the bracket made on the manifold. 69-72 had the newer style bracket (like in Andy4639's photo)

Get yourself the correct part for what you have and you will not be frustrated with having the belt out of alignment and it will look like it is suppose to look.

If a trip to the local junk yard does not get me a suitable bracket I will be breaking out the grinder and cut off tool

If you aren't worried about originality I would find the newer bracket. Shorter belt and easier pulley and belt alignment

Short water pump, well it use to be. I pulled the motor and sold it when I dropped the 6.0 LS in last year!

Aha, that makes sense. Best I can tell, the engine in my 1971 is a 283 from a mid to late 60's Malibu (230 HP). Yes, a tube spacer between a 1/4" plate and the alternator would be an easy and functional solution.

Life got in the way the past couple days...

I like the fabbed bracket idea. I have sent a PM about buying the brackets, but it might be a cool exercise to play with some plate this weekend and see what I can come up with. Worst case, I goof up $5 of metal and still have the brackets.

It appears from the picture that two spacers and bolts would need to go to the fabbed bracket, one on the alternator and one to support the bracket.

Hmmm.....after studying the pics looks like there would be two bolts to attach to the plate; too easy to install the newer bracket seems plenty available (thanks to LS conversions).

I've always ran a support rod from the back of the alternator to a stud on the ex manifold to stop it from vibrating, it always did that regardless what alternator or engine I had on there. I have headers now and the bracket goes to the a/c boss on the intake instead but easier to go exhaust stud.

I used metal conduit tube, smashed and bent the ends to the right length and angles then fit it up and drilled the holes. It's enough to dampen the vibration and belt oscillations.

I purchased the correct bracket from a fellow board member DLTruck1973. It is the same bracket shown in post #8 by Andy4639. Fits and works perfectly (quick shipping too!). For future searchers the part number is: 3951357. Now for belts and PS pump pulley...

I do not think so. I took the valve cover off to look, I thought the number was either 399882 or 398882 - reading a casting number always leaves me wondering I think I read it wrong. I compared a pic of my casting (below) to the pics at crankshaftcoalition.com and I think the casting number really is: 333882
