Help ID these tilt columns

I need some help with pics I have saved. I took these off of Ebay, and usually the buyer "thinks" they came from a 19xx truck. I want label them with correct year they are from. If you can "positively" ID the year let me know. No guesses please....

Ken, this is another Generic type letter I send out when someone asks me about steering columns and dash bezels. DAVE
THERE ARE ACTUALLY 3 DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT COLUMNS FOR THESE YEAR TRUCKS. Yours is Not the 84-87 type that has the wiper controls on it so it only fits up to 1983. I cannot see the shaft connector on yours ,But in the earlier years ,73-83, style there were 2 different types of connections on the bottom of the column. (I may be off by one year on this), but the 73-78 used a fine spline(like a transmissin output) to connect the bottom of the steering column to the intermediate shaft , where as the the 79-83 and newer used a round UNSPLINED shaft with 2 flat sides. You can use either 73-78 or 79-83 as long as you change the entire connecting(intermediate) shaft assembly with it, down to the rag joint on the steering box. The 84-87 and up are interchangeable and unique to the earlier ones in that they have the wiper controls up on the turn signal stalk. that wiper control change is also what makes the gauge cluster trim piece(bezel) change drastically in 84. Off course the bezel depended on trim level,Silverado, Scottsdale, Cheyenne, etc. as to what was on color the face of it was. the Steering columns do not change with trim level. The steering wheels were slightly differnt though. Who cares they were all ugly!

OK so let see if I have this right so far. Look at the text above the pics and tell me if I am right or not...

#1 is a 73-83 model. Like Crossy mentioned it doesn't have the wiper controls on it.

#2 if it has wiper controls on it (hard to tell from pic) then it's a 84+ model. But if not then it's a 73-83.

I think #3 is wrong--it has to be 84 and up because it has wiper controls on the turn signal lever.

yep, i was going to say the same thing. The big hump on the left side is a giveaway, that is there for the rotary switch that is in the column up there. DAVE

OK, I changed #3. So if that is an 84-87 then why is it different from #5. Mike says that one is just like his 85.

im pretttttty sure that 77 was the first year for a tilt column in the trucks. So that means they are all 77+...

furthermore, #2 is definately 78 or newer (NOT 77, and possibly NOT 78, 79 etc) because the cruise setup was just a button on the end of a seemingly normal turn signal lever.

#4 ------ umm it has a funny shifter lever/knob.. not from the 73-91 rounded line. maybe a 88+ something or other or a non-chevy.. jeep used something that i swear was the same damn thing as chevy. I dont know if it was a GM column or whoever made columns made em for jeep too..

#3 and #4 are the same!

Not true. My '73 has a tilt column, and the 73 sales brochure I have indicates it is in fact an option.

fiveeightchevy I think your right. It was supposed to be from a 90 Suburban, but I think it must have been a later year OBS Burb.
