'65 C30 250/SM420/4.10's mileage check...finally got 16MPG

I've only been averaging 14MPG (maybe just a touch more) and wasn't really happy with that, so I started "hypermiling" a little bit to increase my fuel economy (not really sure why it took me this long to do it).

Anyway, I have averaged 16MPG over the last 384 miles doing so. Much better! Not incredible, but more like what I figured it should get.

And here's a picture I took of the POS in front of Weiss Lake a couple of days ago.

Which hypermiling techniques are you using? Having never heard the term until I read your post I looked it up. It explains some of the driving I've seen lately. We used to run vacuum gauges to help with economy (during the 70's fuel "shortage").

What he means by "hypermiling" is that he waits for a semi truck to come up behind him...then he lets it push him down the road while he's in neutral with the engine off.

What size tires are you running? They look fairly tall.

The route I have to drive has a lot of hills, so most of it is just coasting down all the hills I can maintain speed on and doing the pulse and glide thing for those where I can't quite maintain speed. I think that's probably making the biggest difference for me right now. Besides that, I try to keep my speed down to 55-60 and use the pulse and glide method for stoplight-to-stoplight stuff in town.

I know you're kidding, but some of the more hardcore hypermilers will actually draft large trucks. http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...ting-3164.html

32" 235/85R16 recapped mud tires @ 660 revs per mile. The truck runs 2,700RPM @ 60.

Yeah, I think it's kind of fun. And it's certainly not the least logical thing in the world to be doing when you have to drive 75 miles or more every day (soon to be 110!).

Re: '65 C30 250/SM420/4.10's mileage check...finally got 16MPG

I started driving everywhere this way several years back.
Also, when I'm approaching a stop light I try and predict when everyone is going to start rolling again. Start applying the brakes to time it so I'm still rolling when the traffic starts moving again. The goal is to use the forward energy to its full potential. I've gotten pretty skilled at it. Many times I'm rolling up at just the right time to not even have to apply the brakes.
Here is the rule of thumb ;
You want to move forward with the least resistance. Allow natural terrain to aid the forward movement. Avoid using the brakes as much as possible - roll up to the intersection rather than accelerating and braking between each stop light.
I've improved my CRV mpg an average of 3 mpg.

Oh, it's also funny to watch the drivers in the other lanes accelerate off the line, speed up to the next stoplight and have to hit the brakes - coming to a complete stop and sitting there as I come rolling up beside them just as they hit the gas taking off again.

Sub,

Just saw you turn right onto 101 in Rockmart with a smirk on your face. Truck looks good.

Ha, how about that. I guess you live somewhere in the area? I must have had a pretty stupid look on my face if you could see that and were far away enough not to notice how rough the truck is.

On another note, I am averaging about 16.5MPG right now.

Kudos to you Submarine. I've driven that way most of my 50+ driving years. Although I gave up drafting big rigs early on (risky, illegal and it pi$$es them off). I don't often coast downhill either now (was told it's called "Angel Sticking") but I always slip into neutral, without clutching, well before I roll up to a stop.
Now I know I'm Hypermiling.

It seems that way sometimes when I want to accelerate in high gear...

Yeah, I've never really got the idea behind running WOT up to a red light just so you can cook your brakes. I think the term "hypermiling" itself is of pretty recent origins.
