Rear end vibration - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My 72 half ton has had a vibration since I bought it.I finally tracked it down its in the rear end.Any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

Tires , shocks , bushings , axle bearings ,,, are what I would check first

Then check the U-joint on the pinion flange. It is more likely driveshaft or bearing related than something inside the diff housing. Problems there are usually accompanied by very loud and unplesant grinding noises that don't last long. Then the truck doesn't move under it's own power.

You could try measuring how high off the ground it sits. Then jack it up and remove the tires. Put the lugs back on the drums to hold em in place as well as balance. Then lower the rear end onto jack stands about the same height and chock the front wheels. Put it in gear and up to speed. See if it's still vibrating. If not it's in the wheels and or tires. If so, it's deeper. Might want to go to a rear end shop for an estimate.
