305 wake up / refresh

Hey all. I have an 84 with a stock 305 4bbl. Starts and runs well but it leaks and smokes. Instead of dealing with a motor swap, I'd like to freshen up the engine. I am thinking some rebuilt Vortec 305 heads, edelbrock intake to keep the Qjet, ram horn type manifolds or headers with duals and redoing the oil pan gasket and rear main. How do you think that will work for the old girl? Would that possibly bump her up from the 160HP 230TQ net ratings stock? I font want any more power I just want the motor to be comfortable pulling around a 4x4 truck.

Also,

If in the future I was to get the Goodwrench 350 replacent motor, would the 305 Vortec heads be an upgrade to the 76cc stock heads for a low rpm type motor?

Do you think I should verify a compression tesr on this 305 before I start spending money on it?

I'd suggest a Melling MTC1 RV cam and new lifters, cheap upgrade and it really woke up my old 305. Don't forget the new timing chain as well, the original was really worn.

Make sure the motor is actually in good shape before throwing money at it.

From the money you're talking about throwing into it, you might want to look at a crate Goodwrench engine right off the bat! More money up front, but it WILL be comfortable pulling your truck around AND has a warranty! Right now sounds like you are hoping it is valve guides - and if it's not?

When all is said and done, it's still a 305.

Well I am sure you've heard this before around here but let me reiterate "you cannot build this engine for this amount" unless of course you can do all and I mean ALL your own work. http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...FdcSgQodM5wAIg
Not to say you can't hone and rering it and lap your valves to seal then slap it back together but if you plan on keeping your truck I'd start with a fresh 195 hp and maybe cam it and voila! if you have the funds? Just my opinion and I've rebuilt more than one.
