Bed liner coatings??

Has anyone ever used any of the DIY bed liner coatings?? I know there are a couple I've been looking at, one is from Rustolem, the other is from Duplicolor. I know there are probably more out there. Also could this stuff be used to coat a new fuel tank to help seal and protect it before I install it? I don't really want to go back with the plastic cover that traps dirt and moisture.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

i have used the rustoleum one on the interior of an older blazer. i cannot comment on the UV stability, but it did go on well. as i assume with most of these DIY ones, you need to shake/stir them up REAL good. those fibres need to disperse to cover evenly.

also prep work is key, we wire wheeled the every sheetmetal surface we intended to paint. it came out well, it took several coats, but it goes on thin and allows you to get to the texture you want, more coats = more texture.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I used the spray on stuff for the forks on my Harley. Chipped and came off really easily, I wouldn't use it again. I'll have to find the can in the garage and let you know what it was...

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I have used herculiner and duplicolor. I put duplicolor on a lift gate on a truck and herculiner in the bed on an old s10. I followed the directions. Both peeled and chipped off. The duplicolor is slippery when wet. I ended up getting a plastic drop in liner to cover up the stuff in my old s10.

I will always pay for a plastic liner. It's more durable, protects against dents when you throw large items in. I've never had a problem with any plastic liner causing rust.

I would advise against RUST-OLEUM based on my two attempts with their products for undercoatings. See what a company called SEM has to offer that's what some Pros use around town.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I plan on using Raptor liner for my K5 interior. Ian on Extreme Off Road used it on the M715 he has been working on.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I used Herculiner in my egg hauler and am very pleased. Anything you use is only as good as your prep. When you think you are ready, go over it again

Thanks Jim. After I checked things out think I'll go with the Raptor. Soon as I get it done, probably next month after it quits raining everyday, I'll post some pic's to this link to show it off.

You said you had a whimpy 3.08 rear in your K-10, I'd trade ya my 3.73 out of my 86 GMC Sierra classic 1500, in a heartbeat so I could get some more ground speed out of my SM 465 I've got. With the combination of those two I'm in no danger of getting a speeding ticket. LOL

+1 for Raptorliner. So far I have used it on the floors and on the top of my K5.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

Raptor is the best I have found. Comes with the gun to apply it with, and holds up good from my experience.

Thanks guys, as soon as it dries out, I'll give Raptor a go. Don't think it would be a good idea to do it with so much moisture in the air.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

How many kits of the raptor liner do you need to do one of these old trucks, with the long bed?

Re: Bed liner coatings??

+1 for the raptor liner also. best place i've found to buy is tptools.com.

i've used on pickup beds, rocker panels, and trailers, all with good results. don't skimp on the prep.

i think it takes 1.5 kits to do a long bed. cheaper basically to buy 2 and have some left over.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

Hmm... might have to call my local rino liner shop. IIRC they do normal truck beds for $300. So for $66, you don't have to do any of the work. Cause two of these kits on ebay are about $234. Might be something to consider.

linex is by far a better product, if you're going to pay for it, get the good stuff.

One kit should do a long bed.

About how much would the LineX be for a short bed?

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I had Rhino Liner sprayed on the bed and cab floor of my 76. It is very lumpy, not fine texture like Line X, and it is slippery when wet (not good for the cab floor by the driver's pedals.) Line X locally wanted $425 a few years ago for a new Sierra I bought, $625 to color match.

I had a bed rug in my 2000 Silverado and it was good because it covered the space between the tailgate and the bed floor. Two problems - it absorbed water when it rained (even with a good tonneau cover on it) and it caused condensation under the rug. Also, when hauling plywood/osb, it will pick up every small sliver of wood or sawdust which will embed in the rug and you can't get it out with a vacuum - must pick it out with tweezers.

The Rhino Liner I had faded quickly (it was dark gray, in the AZ sun turned light gray) and it was not chemical resistant (spilled some bathroom cleaner on it and it turned green.)

Sounds crazy, but the best I have heard is Line -X for bed protection covered by Bed Rug for best at handling loads. Put plastic caps over the bed rails and front rail and you are good to go for only about $1100-$1200.

One other option is combination of plastic bed liner over sprayed in bed liner.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I just had Linex done in my longbed and it was $580 out the door ton include over the rail. lifetime warranty and prepped the whole bed with 40 grit on a DA sander. Im fairly sure its not coming off very easily.
All I read about was making sure to prep correctly and I didnt want to put in the effort. The outcome was GREAT and Im happy with mine

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I have herculiner in my truck and have no issues. I have also used raptor in a mazda and very good results with it and it can be tinted to match paint. I tried duplicolor and did not like the texture of it compared to the other 2. duplicolor was more flat rubbery and other 2 were rough textured and better at preventing items from sliding.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

Lot of Jeep guys use a product called Monstaliner on DIY jobs. Reviews seem to be really good.

I can say I used the Rustoleum rattle can liner on my Jeep bumpers and it wasn't any better than using $1/can generic spray paint.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I have some good experience using AL's Liner both in the bed of a truck and also as an undercoating in fender wells and cab bottoms. it is pretty durable and for aesthetics it can be painted over with base/clear coat. Amazon usually has the kits for about $85-90. You will probably need two kits to lay daown a thick coat in a long bed. Amazon also sells the spary gun for it but Harbor Freight also has one (about $25) that works very well for the AL's Liner.

Re: Bed liner coatings??

I used Raptor liner on my SWB, and still have a bottle left. I think a kit would cover a LWB. It was $120 shipped with sprayer. Took an after noon to prep and paint. Looks great.. I am always willing to do work on my truck, kinda the reason I got it was to build on it..would rather spend a little time and effort to save a few bucks..On the other hand if I used my truck for work, I would spend the cash and get a warranty.
