Wiring harness questions
For my 1970 GMC 2500 Sierra Grande I was -going- to just replace the wiring, but the offered kits look rather generic (with modern fueses too). I've got the main cab harness soaking in my wife's laundy sink and think I can clean it up, but the stuff from the firewall forward isn't really salvageable.
So, my first question is "what's the other side of the fusebox called"? Basically, I need everything from the firewall forward, which would include the other side of the fusebox. I see "engine harness", but I also need the front lamp harness. Is there some combination of harnesses that will give me that "everything from the firewall forward" that I'm looking for? I'd know what they were if I could see good pictures, but don't know the name they're regularly called by. Thanks! Dave |

Re: Wiring harness questions
The two main harness assemblies in front of the fire wall are the engine harness and a "forward lamp harness". Engine harness has the wiring that goes to the starter motor, distributor, brake warning, temp sender, and if idiot light equipped, oil pressure. The forward lamp harness does everything else under the hood. Headlights, turn signals, side markers, alternator, regulator, and battery and horn connections. The blower, under the hood, is part of the heater harness, fed from under the dash.
The wiring diagram on this thread will help you out http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=185856

Re: Wiring harness questions
Thanks! Does the engine harness have the connector that is essentially the engine-side of the fuse block? It's like a big:

Re: Wiring harness questions
The engine harness has one half "[" and the forward lamp harness the other half "]". The two halves lock together & a screw keeps them plugged into the fuse box. Let me find a picture, it will explain it better than I can.
The engine harness is the left side and the forward lamp harness is the right side.

Re: Wiring harness questions
Thanks! Makes perfect sense. While I'm at it, it looks like LMC does reproduce the connector I need for my heater harness (you can see it's melted below). But what about the copper terminals, I've not actually seen those at Radio Shack or similar... anyone know the correct name for them and where I could buy them?

Re: Wiring harness questions
I don't see the exact style, but I think the name I'm looking for is probably "Packard":

Re: Wiring harness questions
In searching it turns out that most of our connectors are indeed "Packard 56" though you'll see that Delphi uses the same part numbers. Most of the places I found are "old shops that haven't quite embraced the internet", in that you've got to request a quote for a connector (is it ten cents? twelve cents? Who can say in these crazy times.)
Anyway, I wound up finding pcsconnectors.com that seems to stock a broad arrangement, shows prices, and has an online shopping cart. They even have that weird "Christmas Tree" stack connector above, but instead of being $10 at LMC it's $2.10 :-) Here's the list of what I ordered based on my gut feeling of "Yep, I see a lot of those on my car": 1 cavity Packard 58 series female connector 2965478 2965478 5 $0.25 $1.25 1 cavity 2962965 Delphi Packard 56 series connector - Slotted opening 2962965 20 $0.32 $6.40 1 cavity Packard 56 series male connector 2984528 2984528 20 $0.49 $9.80 2 cavity Delphi Packard 56 series Female connector 2973407 2973407 5 $0.45 $2.25 2 cavity Packard 56 series female connector 2973385 - Flasher connector 2973385 4 $0.40 $1.60 12 gauge Packard 56 series female Terminal 2989877 2989877 20 $0.28 $5.60 14/16 gauge Packard 56 series female terminal 2965142 2965142 40 $0.28 $11.20 18/20 gauge Packard 56 series male terminal 2965481 2965481 10 $0.39 $3.90 14/16 gauge Packard 56 series male terminal 2971962 2971962 5 $0.39 $1.95 14/16 Packard 56 ring terminal 2984576 2984576 10 $0.68 $6.80 14/16 gauge 2973849 Packard 56 Ring terminal # 10 Hole size 2973849 10 $0.40 $4.00 18/20 gauge Packard 56 Unplated brass female terminal 2962572 2962572 20 $0.38 $7.60 6 cavity Packard 56 series Black unsealed Female connector 2977233 - Pyramid style 2977233 2 $2.10 $4.20 2 cavity Packard 56 series Female connector 2973872 2973872 4 $0.65 $2.60 2 cavity Packard 56 series Female connector 2977647 2977647 5 $0.75 $3.75 2 Cavity Packard 56 series Black Male Connector 8900826 8900826 5 $0.65 $3.25 |

Re: Wiring harness questions
If you just need a few, NAPA sells the Packard 56 terminals; not cheap, though - about 95 cents each, as I recall.

Re: Wiring harness questions
For the sake of comparison, check out www.wiringharness.com
It's M&H Electrical Fabricators. We, at Heartbeat (on the board) can get their products for you and should be able to save you a few bucks off of their regular prices. They have excellent merchandise.

Re: Wiring harness questions
Old thread update: John and PCSconnectors.com is gone, no more-out of business-I am truly bummed as he was a great resource. If you take exception to this factoid and have info on where pcsconnectors has gone, please share

Re: Wiring harness questions
Yeah, that blows, I just searched for and dug up this thread to go back and buy more.
Anyone have a good source? Waytek has the terminals dirt cheap, but trouble finding all the packard connector housings.

Re: Wiring harness questions
You will need a terminal crimper to crimp on those series 56 terminals. Your average electrical crimpers are not going to work. You will need a barrel ("B") type crimper. There are two types, one with two rows of teeth that crimp both the insulation retaining tabs and the wire tabs at the same time and a single row tool that requires you to perform two crimps.Be careful when bying crimpers, make sure they can crimp all the specific gauges you will be using. I get my terminals from Eb@y.

Re: Wiring harness questions
I have a '72 c10, my front side markers and front turn signals are not working (only the rear). Any ideas of where to start looking?

Re: Wiring harness questions
Terminalsandconnectors.com. They are offering 5% off and using the list from PCS-most if not all Delphi part numbers come up available. Other manufacture's used the Packard 56 style connectors(Navistar, Freightliner if I am not mistaken+others)Look for suppliers of those manufacturers(different part numbers)as well.

Re: Wiring harness questions
Since this was brought back up, I thought I'd explain that you don't need the barrel crimper if you are working with a small number of Packard 56 terminals. While it takes longer, a regular crimper, solder, and needle nose pliers will yield a solid, reliable connection.

Re: Wiring harness questions
I use Terminal Supply Company or TSC in Troy Michigan for all of my terminal and connecter needs. GM used (for our trucks) the Packard 56 style terminal on about 80% of there wiring harness and I buy them for my tach harness builds. Prices are fair and customer service is great. Orders can take some time now and then.
Hope this helps, Tom

You will probably not find a "one stop shop" for all of the connectors. Some of these are just not available. Some of them you will have to find good used ones and re pin the terminals in them Good luck, Tom
