Unhappy truck stuck in 4x4

when i got my 98 z71 the 4 hi light always blinked. even if 2 hi light was steadily on or 4 lo. while going down the road I accidently hit either my 2hi or 4 hi doing 40-50 mph. The truck skidded and I heard a grinding type sound. could only stay in 4 hi or 4 lo after that. so I was towed to a repair place and they said a fork was bent in the transfer case, and I removed the front shaft so I could drive it until repairs. I have put a used and warrantied transfer case in and the problem remains. any ideas how I might fix? thanks in advance

Why is that ??? You mean it won't move in 2 hi ...?

Shifting into 4 hi at speed on dry pavement, while not a good thing to do, shouldn't have caused instant damage. You've got something else going on here and I don't know what it is, but it might be something in the front end.

First step would be take it back to the place that installed/warranteed the transfer case.

Re: truck stuck in 4x4

Theres an electric actuator on front differential that engages the front axles. Do you have a shift lever on floor or is it electric on dash.

yes I could not get back into 2 hi after this incident, pulled front drive shaft for temporary fix. got the transfer case from a place that had just been bought by lkq, and my step dad put in transfer case. my youngest brother just said the other day the exact thing happened to his truck with the actuator!! so maybe its that. I can say the truck pulled violently to the right but everyone said due to worn down street tires. thanks for the replies, I cant wait to have confidence back in the truck again!!

The lever wouldn't move to the 2hi position or it doesn't work in that position ???

I really don't understand what is going on here. You pulled the front driveshaft because it was making noise or just because you were stuck in 4hi?

Those front actuators are a piece of junk, if it is like the one in my 1989. Since mine is essentially a "farm truck" I just stuck a short piece of 3/4" PVC on the end of the actuator and stuck it back in so that the axle is always connected. Or you can get one of those Posi-Lok cable controls and install it, but honestly I don't think that it is worth it. A lot of other 4wd makes (jeep, anyway) have just done away with the axle disconnect. I don't see how it can be good for your spider gears anyway; I'd rather just have everything turning normal.

Re: truck stuck in 4x4

Mechanics pulled it to bypass the case so I could drive around normally

Okay, I'm sorry - I can't help you much then.

I just assumed since it was a pickup then it was the floor lever like my 89.

I will NOT buy one of those electric shift 4wds

Re: truck stuck in 4x4

Mitch, did you ever get it figured out ???

I'm guessing your electric shift gizmos are messed up.

If it was mine, I would disconnect all of that, and find a floor shift mechanism from a junk yard and permanently engage the CAD.
