my 64 is alive!
Hey guys! I finally got my 64 running today. Some of you know I had water in the oil. What I did was this...rebuild the carb, deck the head .030 thousands, replace fuel lines, new plugs and wires and then start it up and enjoy right! Wrong!!!!when I started it, it ran like crap. Maybe 1 cylinder firing. I was thinking okay, just need to tune it and go from there. Checked compression on #1 cylinder and....zero! At this point my dad came to the house to see the truck for the first time and we pulled the valve cover. He noticed the rocker on the exhaust side looked off. Sure enough I cranked the engine and the rocker didn't move. I thought I destroyed the engine......the pushrod was wedged and I had to yank it out with pliers. I put another one in and saw that in had the previous one in the wrong spot probably next to the lifter. Anyway, once I put it in and adjusted the lash, the old 292 ran like a dream. Super quiet and smooth. Thanks to my dad for catching that problem before I grenaded the engine

Re: my 64 is alive!
They really are
I used to work winters doing maintenance at this big summer resort in Colorado. They also kept a herd of cows, which the mostly retired dad of the owner brothers/sister took care of. One dad the old man said the 66 Chevy 4x4 was getting hard to start in the mornings. Keep in mind that it gets 35 to 45 below almost every night, and the pickup was never plugged in. So one of the brothers sends me up the hill with a fresh set of spark plugs to see if that would help. The plugs that I took out were so crusted and bad that I couldn't believe any engine would actually run with them, yet it was still starting every day with some difficulty at 35 below zero! Next day his dad says "the truck started right up!" If the 350 in my 1976 GMC ever wears out, I'm thinking about trying to find a 292 to drop in there .....

Re: my 64 is alive!
Thanks for the comments. I'm a big v8 fan but I'm very happy with the 292 right now. Smokes the tires quite easily with the 3.73 posi also

Re: my 64 is alive!
Well you still have time to register for the Brothers Truck Show or at least stop by and say Hi. I think your son would love the show.

Though nothing really wrong with a 350 carb or TBI.

Glad the 292 is alive and running. Ah, beats an orange 350 any day.
