Oil Filter Serious Challenge - 98 C1500 Suburban 5.7L Vortec

First time for everything. Oil filter stuck and I dismantled it (see pics). I can't get it off. I tried everything in the toolbox. Is this reverse thread? Very little info online about this. Someone suggested this could be an aftermarket. Feel stupid cause I've been changing my own oil for years….on this suburban. I haven't paid attention to which way it goes on and off, I just do it…second nature. But this one SEIZED!!! HELP

Bought a 3 legged wrench. Didn't work. I drilled a hole through it. Did the screw driver trick…nope. Just shredded the filter. All that's left is the top screw on part. Will the center threaded piece come down if I can get the correct headed screw somewhere?

I would grind two pieces of steel about an inch long that are ground to fit in the remaining filter slots. Weld them to a 8" long piece of steel to use as a handle. I would apply steady increasing pressure to remove remaining piece in a clockwise direction. Looks like you already tried a chisel in one slot. I think steady increasing pressure would be better than jarring it with a chisel.

Looks like you could put two BIG flatblade screwdrivers in opposing slots and a bar in between them and do the same thing.

Re: Oil Filter Serious Challenge - 98 C1500 Suburban 5.7L Vortec

I tried the two flat blade screwdrivers….no budging. If the center threaded piece can be screwed out, I am gold. I didn't have one here today but can pick up tomorrow. Is this unit stock? I'm not the original owner. It also looks like it's leaking somewhere.

There is very little info online and no one lists a replacement even online.

just curious what brand of filters do you use?

and do you hand tighten them or put a filter wrench on them?

Strangely oil filters are a strange thing. I put a Wix on my truck and hand tightened plus a bit more but when I went to remove it it took nearly everything I had.

This is going to require some well placed heat to allow everything to soften and loosen them some very outside of the box dealing. I would get two very long bolts or rod and stick them into the remaining holes then use a prybar and twist with even force.

Re: Oil Filter Serious Challenge - 98 C1500 Suburban 5.7L Vortec

i never use a wrench to tighten, that's why i was asking. could be the source of the problem.

the only filter i've ever had stick on me was a motorcraft brand filter on a 347 stroker that was in one of our dirt track cars.

Re: Oil Filter Serious Challenge - 98 C1500 Suburban 5.7L Vortec

I gotta say THANKS A MILLION to old Money on here. I went and got a 12 mm Hex socket and that did the trick just like you said!

It was a purolater that I did not wrench tighten. Somehow it seized up. First time for everything I suppose.

Even the local shop told me it was a 7/16 or 1/2. The correct size is a 12mm for anyone who has to do this in the future.

Thanks Guys

Now about that oil leak all over the housing.....It's on the transmission bell housing and even comes down on the oil filter some.

Anyone ever seen the oil filter adapter leak or is this the rear seal, based on the pictures?

Thanks

Re: Oil Filter Serious Challenge - 98 C1500 Suburban 5.7L Vortec

tough to tell in the pictures the source of the leak. if its on the bellhousing it could be coming from your oil pressure sending unit. i've had quite a few sbc's leak from there.

Re: Oil Filter Serious Challenge - 98 C1500 Suburban 5.7L Vortec

There is a seal on the oil filter adapter that can leak. The oil pressure sending unit can leak. And the valley seal on the intake manifold gasket can leak. And the distributor seal can leak. Sometimes it runs down from the rear of the valve cover too.

Oil doesn't run up hill.

The oil pressure switch doesn't look like fun to get to. Under the distributor?

A new replacement gasket set on the oil cooler adapter might not hurt either. I've replaced the gaskets on mine a couple of times on each engine swap I did.

If you do decide to replace the oil filter adapter gaskets, do not buy the "help" brand. I'd recommend the felpro.
