Fiberglass Subwoofer Box
I've been wanting to make a subwoofer box for my 91 c1500 single cab for a while now, out of fiberglass but haven't seen any on a 88-98. I've done a lot of research on this over the past few days but I don't know if I should do mdf and fiberglass or just fiberglass only. If I do only fiberglass, how much will I need for it to be strong enough to hold 2 12's and so it won't sound like crap. If anybody's done this on an obs or on another single cab, I need some advice.

Re: Fiberglass Subwoofer Box
The simplest way to do it would be mdf bottom, back and sides then wrap it with t-shirt material and put the resin on it. Strengthen up the inside joints with a few pieces of fiberglass mat. You can buy mdf rings on ebay or make your own, use wooden dowels to hold them where you want then glue them down. If you search on youtube for fiberglass box building you can see different ideas and how they are built.
Or you can build wood sides and put down painters blue tape on the back wall of the cab and floor and put down 7 or 8 layers of fiberglass mat and it will form to the contours and have maximum airspace for the enclosure. There is a few different ways to do it, it just depends on what you wanna do. Most all of them are wrapped in either fleece or t-shirt material and they put resin on top of that. The t-shirt material uses up less resin then fleece. I don't have any pictures but I am building a fiberglass box for my extended cab for under the seat for 2 square 8s. Best advice I can give you is get in there with some cordboard and play with different shapes and see what will work the best or what gets you the look you want. |
