When you say manifold vac line "not connected" it should be plugged / capped off.
otherwise you would have a " vacume leak".

And yes I'm guilty of tossing quite a few assemblies to the trash,that's what you did(souping it up).Chrome was more expensive,and better made then now.
Otherwise I'd just flip the lid over

Which won't matter at all for setting the timing.
