loud banging from drivers side back end

Hello,

I have a 1968 Chevy C10. It drives straight and narrow but whenever I hit the smallest of bumps or potholes the truck makes a terrible metal on metal "bang." I have looked around under the truck and tried to listen to the exact location of the sound but I cannot figure it out.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

Is your truck lowered? Riding on the bump stops? Shock bushing or shock worn out? Bed mounted loose on the frame?

It could be coming from the trailing arm that bolts to the rear end housing. Remove the two nuts at the U bolt on each side and slide on another washer, then the nut and retighten. This worked for me for the time being...

Look at the shock mounts and have someone bounce the truck. My truck had loose bolts and it did the same thing. Sometimes the holes will get reamed from bouncing up and down.

Mine was the pan hard bar, found it by laying under the rear of the truck and bouncing the truck bed up and down while moving my head around following the sound. Once I realized it sounded like it was coming from the bar I grabbed it, shook it and heard the noise I was looking for.

Found a squeaky shock while I was back there too, didn't even know about that haha!

Noises are always fun to locate. I had a similar problem that sounded like a loud knocking and at one point I thought it was a main bearing or rod but the sound came from the rear end. I pulled the rear-end apart to replace the bearings and seals. While tearing it down I noticed what looked like the previous owner beat the shaft pin into place. But what had happened was the shaft pin retaining bolt broke which allowed the shaft pin to slide up and down and it was banging on the gears inside the differential. Gears were okay but I had to replace the shaft pin and retaing bolt. Now, no more knocking.

i'd take the brake drums off and check for proper operation of the brakes
