door alignment issue w blazer

Replaced the intire floorboard and firewall with one from a truck cab, took lots of messurements and everything came together just fine, hung the door and have proper gaps around the doors. Now heres my issue, I have to lift the door up to close or open them, after they come off the strikers they drop down around a 1/2 inch or so. I haven't installed the rocker boxes yet therefore I have flexs at the firewall causing the drop.... I'm new to this blazer stuff but having fun figuring it all out. thanks for any help.

Try replacing your door hinge pins and bushings. I had same problem and replaced them and all good now.

There tight, it has flex at the A post.firewall, I'm thinking the rockerboxes need to be installed at this point.

Is the top on the Blazer? If not, and you have one, everything I have read up on so far is that it is in your best interest to have it on and bolted down before installing your new rocker boxes. If your gonna run permanently topless it wont matter much as long as your doors are right before you weld the boxes in.

Re: door alignment issue w blazer

The reason for the rocker boxes is so you can take the top off, so essentially right now there isn't really anything keeping the body from folding in half other than the frame.

Re: door alignment issue w blazer

I figured I should chime in here. I am currently running without a top and no rocker boxes. I too have run into issues with the door, and if I get in the back and jump up and down you can see the top of the door to body gap change.

When I first took my top off both the doors would hit the body at the top of the gap. The only way I was able to get the doors to look and close properly was to add some spacers in the mounts at the front of the floor board and the one behind the doors at the start of the bed. I put 3/8" in each one. I'm not planning on running this permanently but it will do until I repair the rust and replace the rocker boxes.

I'm thinking the rocker boxes will add some tension and pull the cowl section forward. That should also pull the top hinge forward, raising the door, so it closes properly.

Check the front of the door where the top hinge mounts and look for cracks. My door would drop about 1/2 inch because the outer panel and reinforcement were cracked.

Re: door alignment issue w blazer

put the top on it and weld your rocker boxes in. when I was buying and selling a lot of these blazers one of the first things I would look at was the inside top of the doors above the panels. People would take their top off and the body would flex especially if it had the least bit of rust in those floorpan/rocker areas. They would dent the doors by having to throw a shoulder into the door to get it to open. Learned that with my very first blazer when I took the top off

Re: door alignment issue w blazer

Thanks guy's, as I said in the 1st post I took a truck cab that was solid and cut it up and replaced the floorboard and firewall on the blazer so I'm working with good metal.
I gotta cut the truck windshield frame out and install the blazer windshield header, then I will bolt the top back on and install those rockerboxes. Gonna order those rear bed supports to tie in the bed and rockerboxes together also.
I will also be test fitting the doors during this process also. I'm confident that everything will come together in do time. This blazer has been a learning curve for me, but I've really enjoying the challenge of it.
Thanks for all your help and support, there are some very smart builder's on here in the blazer area.

I think if you can pull the door up to close it your hinges aren't as tight as they should be. I can't even move my door. Also the striker on the body is adjustable if your body lines are good. Try moving it down a little to see if that helps.

Re: door alignment issue w blazer

not trying to act like a know it all here and there are so many more people here on this site that have way way way more experience with this than me
but before i would do any more work on this truck the firewall and tub need braced ideally with a top on it doors shut and aligned up
or braces from firewall to door jamb striker area
these things never line up right without some very good bracing
i cant hardly believe that some of you are running around with out rocker boxes and no top
i would think it would fold in two they are so weak in the middle
with out the top on them

I agree 100% and as stated in my other post I'm putting the top back on and hanging the doors back in place and then installing the rocker boxes, After some research I see that having the top on is key in installing the rockerboxes and alignment of the doors......
This is a great board for the resorces guys and gals need to get the job done right.
Thanks for all the imput aswell as the pms I've recieved on this matter....
