16 to 20 gallon tanks

Is installing a 20 gallon tank a simple matter of swapping the tank? Id assume the fuel sender/pickup is the same.
This would be on my long bed pickup

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

The Sender is the same and the straps and brackets are the same.
I replaced my leaky 16 gallon tank with a 20 gallon unit on my long bed 1985 C10. The only thing I changed, besides the tank, was the rotted out straps and brackets.

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

Are the hoses the same? There's some controversy about that on another forum. Suppliers only list one filler neck hose and one vent hose.

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

The filler hoses differ between 1973-81 and 1982-1991. You have to be careful of this when you start mixing beds. The 82+ beds will fit the 73-81 frames but the filler hoses don't fit the early tanks.
The gas tank sellers list a different tank for the RV series from the 82-86 CK. 1987-1991 RV with TBI probably has baffles for the pump in tank sender assembly.

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

Understood about the year differences. On same year, do the same filler hoses and vent hoses work on 16 & 20?

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

The 20 gal tank is longer. There's only one bend in the filler and vent hoses. I had to cut my hoses shorter with handy cutters but only slightly. I didn't need to put new ones on.
The parts house hoses are probably 16gal length or a little longer.

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

This should show what I'm talking about.
The 20gal tank is obviously longer from the strap dimples to the end of the tank. More than I remembered. Did this in 1994.

Re: 16 to 20 gallon tanks

hoses are fine. I retrofitted the newer filler with a door to my both sides of my bed anyways. Used a exhaust reducer to go from old inlet at tank (smaller) to adapt to new filler at bed side (larger). Works great and no more spillage.
Lock the nozzle and wait for the click.

thanks for the responses

edit: those photos above appear to show a significant length and filler location difference

I don't remember it being that significant. But it looks like it is. 21 years ago...
