1/2 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive frame questions.

Need to make sure a 81-87 1/2 ton frames are the same as 81-86 3/4 frames are the same.

Trying piece together several parts piles into 3 trucks. Mix and match quite a few things.

The frames look the same but are the 81-87 1/2 and 3/4 2 wheel drive frames the same?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: 1/2 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive frame questions.

Steve, I think they are close. But you might find that the frame section where the front crossmember is is deeper on the 1/2 ton frame (as odd as that sounds). I used a 3/4 ton (from an 81) crossmember, a-arms and spindles on the front of my 64 suburban to get disc brakes. Fit perfectly, including the inside-the-frame stiffeners that the 3/4s have. But other guys with 1/2 ton 73-87s seem to be saying it doesn't fit because of the height of the frame channel.

Re: 1/2 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive frame questions.

Just finished a ccsb conversion on an 81, using a 1/2 ton rear clip mated to a 3/4 ton front end. Section height at the point just aft of the cab had the 3/4 ton at 8-1/4" where the 1/2 ton was 6-3/4". This made for a nice boxing area, but there was some difference. As stated earlier, I had to change upper ball joint, retaining the upper a-arm, while I had to completely replace the lower a-arm with the 1/2 ton donor unit.
Just my findings and input.

Re: 1/2 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive frame questions.

thanks........instead of swaping 1/2 to 3/4 I was given a 3/4 blown up 6.2 , so one problem solved and another one created.

I can now put together a nice 2 wheel drive 3/4 with a/c. I will still have enough parts to build 2 other trucks............I need a 3/4 bad but strength wise and health wise I do not have the energy to do these and stuff I really need to finish.

Thanks guys.

I have another thread to start about converting diesel to gas engine fuel questions

Thanks,
Steve
