72Gmc 1ton

Got it home today. Not much to look at. 14000 lb gvw. 19.5 wheels. No power steering or brakes. 350 with a 4 speed not sure if it runs yet. going to take off a few things and give the body/bed to a friend to make a farm trailer, the cab is rotted bad above the windshield. will probably cut the dash out. gotta get it gone before someone calls the city on me. really thought it strange that it didn't have power steering or brakes on such a heavy duty truck.

Re: 72Gmc 1ton

It is odd that it got the Super Custom trim, chrome bumper, sliding window, and HD radiator, but no P/S or PB. I just love those super low profile utility beds they use on the west coast. I'd love to fond one just like that w/o the header panel rot

Re: 72Gmc 1ton

I have a 71 one ton but it is not that heavy and it has power breaks but no power steering. The only time you miss it is turning into parking spaces, you know the slow turns. That truck is really cool I saw a chart on here the trucks with the 11,000 lbs axle were like 6:13 geared. Yikes!

Re: 72Gmc 1ton

I believe this was a camper hauler. Probably an Alaskan. See that bracket on the fender? That is a stabilizer mount. It may have been retired from camping and put to work in it's last years. If this had power brakes, the booster would have been mounted under the floor with a breather up through the floor between the door and driver seat. The emergency brake is on the driveshaft, rear is an HO110, like medium duties. It's really a light medium duty. This is the equivalent to the 3500HD that came out in '92.

i just saw a breather on the floor by the driver seat-i had not looked under the truck yet- so i guess it DOES have power brakes

if you look close on the SPID pic it has 5:43 gears, maybe an optional ratio???

Re: 72Gmc 1ton

Yeah, those axles "could" have some deeep gears. I'd have to look at a book to know what the tallest ratio was. I've never known of one in a C30/3500, but these rears could have a 2spd unit. I always thought that would be cool to do. I have seen but a few of these trucks in my life...or at least since I knew of them. Heck Jerry, hardly anyone knows much on these. Don't feel bad. You'll know the most on these by the time you're done. I missed on a Harbor utility bed out there not long ago. Was working to arrange shipping when some member in Chicago kept bringing the thread back up till a local guy saw it and nabbed it. I meant to thank the guy who was enjoying talking about it so much he blew it for either one of us. Anyway, I need a single wheel 8'. But if I had a dual rear truck I would be back to figuring out a way! Thanks for the offer.

Question Re: 72Gmc 1ton

i just looked underneath and there are 2 boosters mounted on the passenger side. it looks original but since it's the first/only one i've ever seen/owned i'm not sure.Tim you know way more about these than myself, is this correct. both boosters look identical one a couple feet or so behind the other.

poor old truck been sitting since 2003, checked the oil and coolant, cleaned the points, sprayed a little carb cleaner in it and it fired right up actually sounds good even with rotten gas in the tank. if the cab wasn't so bad it would be worth putting it back on the road. with 543 gears it would probably get 5 or 6 m.p.g.

Re: 72Gmc 1ton

That gas is better than gas from last summer. Too bad about the rust. You could put a Gear Vendors in it to ring the revs down. Probably could do 50 in O/D. My tow truck had 5:13s. I could start out in 3rd and hit 4th at 25, which was still in front of my house...which isn't big.
I guess that sounds right having two boosters. It's been so long that I've seen one I don't truly know. If you like big round rears this one will be pleasing to look at

my buddy stopped by this morning when he finished cutting hay and fell in love with the truck, especially that service truck bed. he left here in a hurry to go see a buddy of his that has a few old 67-72 trucks around the farm and see if any of them have a better cab-he wants to fix it and use it on his property. he was shocked that the bed was in such good shape. he definitly has more time and money than i do so i let him have it---after i take what i want off it.

That's great! I'm glad to see it will survive...and most likely be workin' on the ranch. The top could be cut off and replaced.
