Factory Assembly Manual? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Is a Factory Assembly Manual a good investment at $40? I was looking at buying the service manual for $25, but maybe the FAM has more info?

Or should I buy both???

I would say the factory one may be some help from you if you were like some guys on the board their manuals are in their heads

I have both and use both of them all of the time. The service manual explains a lot of proceedures and the illustrations/pictures are very helpful.

The assembly manual is helpful on the bady assembly and locations of parts.

I would recommend getting both.

Get both if you can, but the assembly manual is probably the more important of the two if you are doing or planning a restoration.
If you have a real nice truck and just doing light repairs, the service manual may be better suited.
But I would buy both if able to though.

Be sure to look when you buy an assembly manual.I bought mine at a show and it was sealed in plastic.I left it that way so it would stay in decent shape since I had to travel 200 miles home.I found that the printer had not kept quality control to the standards most people would expect.The manual is readable for the most part but some pages are really not very useable.Also the factory assembly manual doesn't have anything like a table of contents so you just have to get to know it by looking for what you need in it.
Both are handy to have though.Another useful item in the way of documentation is a LMC Catalog.They are much higher on price than the BB vendors but their catalog has great exploded veiws of many if not all the assemblys on these trucks.

Personnally I would buy most everything available........if nothing else because down the road its good reference material........

keep an eye out on ebay occasionaly i see the service and assembly manuals on there, I personally have both and they come in handy espically with wiring diagrams,and as mentioned the LMC catalog is also a great resource
